Help us support Major recover from a hit and run in Castlecliff, Whanganui.

Whanganui, Manawatu-Wanganui

Tēnā koutou katoa, He mihi ki a koutou katoa mō te tautoko I tēnei wā mā te whānau o tā tātou tama i tēnei wā uaua, kua whakaatu koutou i te ngākau mahaki me ngā ringa aroha I toro mai ki a tātou. E kore te aroha me te mihi e mimiti.

On Saturday, 11th November, our beloved Major [John Major Taurua-McKay] became the victim of a hit-and-run accident in Castlecliff, leaving him with serious head injuries. He is currently fighting for his life at Starship Hospital. This tragedy has deeply affected our whānau, especially his brothers, who witnessed this heartbreaking event.

We are reaching out to our community for support in this challenging time. Major will require extensive medical care and rehabilitation, and his journey to recovery will be a long one. In addition, his brothers will need counselling to help them process and cope with this traumatic experience.

To assist our whānau, we have set up a fundraiser through Givealittle.

We are grateful for any support you can provide. Your kindness and generosity mean the world to us and will help Major and his brothers on their journey to healing.

We want to acknowledge St John’s, the team at Whanganui Hospital for all they did to help our boy and the team at Starship Hospital who are working tirelessly – words cannot express our gratitude.

Hei konā mai i roto i ngā mihi aroha me te whakawhetai.

Incredibly heartening news about our boy Major's recovery.  20 November 2023

"He oranga ngakau, He hikinga wairua - When it touches your hearts, it lifts your spirits." E Pā, tēnā koe mō au ringa e toro atu ki te tama nei, tōna whānau me te whānau whānui. He huarahi anō mā te katoa ki te hiki i te oranga. Kātahi te motu aroha ko tēnei, mei kore ake koutou.

Late last week, Major opened his eyes again, marking a huge step in his journey back to us. He's still very tired but starting to chat a little, surpassing what we dared hope.

Major's still confined to bed, but he's giving his all and is undergoing physiotherapy. We're witnessing encouraging signs; he knows us all & can answer a patai after thinking about it. His hand-eye coordination is picking up, even if it's bit by bit. This shows his fighting spirit and the strength we know is in him.

Our hearts are overflowing with relief and hope. A massive thank you to all our whānau and mates for standing by us. From the kind words from Major's rugby team to the aroha from our extended whānau, the Whanganui community & folks from all corners of Aotearoa - it has helped us stay strong during this tough time.

Major is going to need continuous support. The generosity poured into the fundraising will be vital. As a whānau, we've decided to stop the fundraising; however, we will update you again in a week or so.

A big shout out to Whatu Ora and the medical teams looking after Major and all of you for your messages & support.

With heartfelt thanks, Kiriwai, Daniel, the Taurua whānau and the McKay family.
