Overseas Cancer Treatment for Andrew

  • So Upset with Facebook right now...

      23 July 2019
    Main image

After running a Facebook fundraising campaign alongside the Givealittle page Facebook has taken that fundraiser down and refunded all donations to the people who gave so generously to our cause!

I have no clue what rule we broke or violated but this is a big kick in the guts!

    Nearly $900 gone!

So we are now asking these wonderful people to donate the amount into the givealittle page once they receive the refund.

We are so happy with Givealittle and how it works. We recommend staying with this for any fundraising you may do in the future.

Many thanks to you all...and on we go.

    Have a great day

    Stacey and Anaru

  • Help us stop the cancer growing

      2 July 2019
    Main image

Andrew has been having chemotherapy treatments and his tumors were shrinking and now they are growing again. He is back to square one and has been given two options that may help from the New Zealand medical system.

One is a monthly injection to stabilize the tumors and stop the growth; he has had the first injection this week...

The second is a treatment that is only available to us in Australia! This involves injecting radiation directly into the tumors in the hope that the radiation will kill the cancer cells and the tumors will die.

The cost is $50,000 plus accommodation and living expenses and it is the only medical option available for this particular cancer.

There is a third option available and one that we are seriously looking into involving clearing and healing the body via the lymphatic system and food.

This is also in Australia and also privately funded.

To find out more about this treatment please visit them here:

Please help us in any way you can; time is of the essence!

    Thank you

  • the cold hard facts...

      1 December 2018

OK, so as most of you know, Anaru had an appointment last week with his Oncologist; unfortunately I was attending work training in Auckland so could not attend; However, he was fully supported by other family members who have given me the update to share...

Neuroendocrine tumour is the name of the condition.

It was on the slow end of the scale in regards to growth three months ago and is now moving towards the middle of the spectrum. It was 6.5cm and is now 7.6cm, showing an increase of 1.1cm in three months.

We need to now try to control the growth. Another special scan in Wellington will show growth in the tumor. The specialist said 'things aren't matching up at the moment'.

The new scan will apparently ID the aggressiveness of the tumour.

Due to the unexpected growth of the tumour the Australian treatment is off the table at this stage. However, it may again be suitable at a later date once the growth has been reversed. In the meantime, all funds that have been generously donated to our Givealittle page will be banked and used for various large costs that pop up along this journey (we have invested thousands already, and this is why we are so very grateful for all help received x).

    THE NEXT STEPS...

1 - Another 'special' scan in Wellington.

2 - Visit to Oncologist in Palmerston North.

    3 - Chemotherapy orally for 4 weeks.

    4 - Scan again in 6 weeks.

This is over a 6 month timeframe. If working, OK - If not, re-assess.

The treatment is to stop or shrink the tumour growth.

    SOME GOOD NEWS...

Anaru is now back on his Keto diet of high protein and fat - low/no carbs and no sugar. He is also following is herbal supplementation and is not drinking alcohol.

He is focusing on positivity on a daily basis.

He is controlling his pain rather than riding it out.

He is resting when his body tells him to do so.

He has accepted distance healings with an open heart and spirit. (Thank you, you know who you are <3 )

He is allowing me to work with him on his pain management.

    He, and we, have hope!

Thank you all so very much for your continued support and sharing of advice, love and good wishes; you truly cannot know how much it means to us both!

    Thank You

    We love you

    Stace and Anaru

So we have just received the appointment date for the next time we meet with the oncologist.

    28th November.

We will be discussing best options for treatment at this meeting.

We know Australia is the best option and we are looking at additional fundraising options to get Anaru there ASAP.

Thanks so much for your continued support and donations so far...

  • Story so far (part two)...

      6 November 2018

    29th October 2018

So, as most of you know Anaru (Andrew) had his Oncology appointment last week to get the results of where the primary is.

Last week was quite tough and it has taken me a while to get my words in line - so that is why I am updating only now - apologies to everyone for the delay.

    ONCOLOGIST REPORT

In short, the diagnosis is Neuro-endocrine cancer that has metastasized to the liver. They cannot find the primary place (where the cancer started) because it has moved on and is no longer there. They believe it probably started in the bowel but they cannot be certain. They believe it travelled through the blood, but again this is not conclusive.

What IS conclusive is that it is in his liver and he has been give three options for treatment. His best option being A very powerful treatment that is only available in Australia at this stage, which is getting excellent results, and of course is privately paid for - to the amount of AUS $50,000+. I do not know the name of this treatment as yet but will be doing more research to find out and will let you know.

It also turns out that his particular cancer is very slow growing and he may have had it for quite a number of years. Unfortunately that is why it was not detected earlier; but the good news is we have time on our side...many people live their whole life through with this form of cancer (there is no absolute cure but it can be dealt with, shrunk, and lived with...

So, he is now deciding which route to take - at this stage if he had the choice of course he would go with the Australian treatment (I will be setting up a 'give a little' page to see if we can raise the funds). We meet with the Oncologist again in one month.

    ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE/NATUROPATHIC REPORT

For those who don't know this journey, and I truly hope it is most of you, this is not an easy road to walk.

Not only are you literally staring at your own mortality, you are completely overwhelmed with choices. Both medical and alternative ways to go and what to do.

Anaru initially decided to go on a Keto diet and ingest certain herbs that are proven to help. Over the last 2-3 weeks the stress of waiting has taken a toll and he is no longer following the Keto diet, although he is very strict on his sugar intake and still taking the herbs, the carbs have won the day so far.

He has also stopped the kawakawa wraps and visiting the naturopath.

So, we are on the next phase of the journey that he is working through - the stage of resignation. What I would ask ALL of you is please speak and hold the space of positivity.

He does not need to be reminded if he has a slice of bread or a beer that this is not exactly what he needs right now; he already knows this...he is working through this phase and he will get there...

In the meantime, he knows what is best for him and has taken all information into consideration. However, these decisions are his to make and his alone.

    His life <3 His choices

    PERSONAL REPORT

On a personal note, my role is to support him in any decision he makes for himself and his life; even if it does not align with my own view or opinion.

When he is ready to revisit any of the treatments, or even try new ones, I will be there to help where and when I can.

In himself, he looks good and is still working around the homestead and looking after the animals.

There is a level of forgetfulness and confusion that was not there before; this is a part of the condition being in the liver - so please don't be upset if he forget things (even if you literally just said it...). He also gets overwhelmed with information quite easily and is extremely sensitive to loud noise (this is where I feel very sorry for him, living with a chatterbox loudmouth like me! :D )

In the meantime, while he is working through all this new information and medical choices, I strive to hold a space of calm and support (and keep my voice slower and quieter than normal); some days I am more successful at this than others, but that's life, right? :)

We are both practicing breathing techniques and allowing personal space when required.

We also don't focus on it 24 hours a day - I feel this is important for healing and getting on with the job of living life.

It was his birthday last Friday just gone and we had an amazing weekend of family and friends calling round - three days of too much food, alcohol and laughter, and not enough sleep - may not be on any treatment recommendations but it sure was good for the soul! :)

Thank you everyone who made his and our weekend so special x

So, that's about all for now Whanau and friends.

I will keep you posted as the journey unfolds.

We truly appreciate you all x

  • Our story so far...

      6 November 2018

    11th August 2018, 4am

Our lives changed in one instant.

At around 2am Anaru had pains in his side where his liver is. The pain was so bad he asked me to take him to the emergency ward. He had an x-ray and they found dark spots on his liver. Another x-ray with dye showed 15 lesions; and this was a secondary malignancy...the search was now on for the primary source. He was admitted into hospital where blood samples were taken for testing and a biopsy was planned.

This post is the posting to his family over the first week...

    16th August 2018

    WHANAU UPDATE

    Kia Ora whanau

Anaru is going in for another CT scan this morning and if they can see any lesions on his liver they will do the biopsy tomorrow in Whanganui. After that they will get his pain under management and he will be allowed home to wait for the results.

If they cannot see anything they are going to stick with the original plan of the biopsy being done in Palmerston North on Monday.

So fingers crossed they can see something today.

    We will keep you posted.

    Much Love

    Anaru update...

Ataamarie whanau. Anaru had a decent sleep and is going in for his biopsy at 9am this morning.

What this means is they will take tiny samples from one of the lesions on his liver and put it under a microscope to see if they can find where the primary source of the problem is coming from.

It will be a few days before we know the results.

The procedure is only under local anaesthetic and the sample is taken with a syringe so all going well he should be able to go home this afternoon.

He will be on medication for the pain while we wait for the results and once we have them we can make a plan of where to go from there.

    On a heart/spirit note...

We went for a drive to Kai Iwi yesterday and the Kereru was in the orchard at the marae.

Kereru followed me back to the pub and sat in the willow tree looking down at Anaru. He stayed there watching Anaru the whole time until we left. 🌈

Karakia was taken in the hospital room again last night as it has every night and we are so grateful to everyone who has done this for us and with us; we can feel the love and healing 💕

We collected water from the Kai Iwi farm spring last night and he has had it by his side all night ❤️

I will keep you posted on where we are at on a daily basis and try to give you full updates. Of course if you have any questions at all please feel free to message or call me.

    18th August

    Morena whanau

Anaru had a reasonable sleep last night a we are heading home soon. As soon as the doctor signs off his pain relief meds.

The biopsy yesterday went without a hitch. However he is in some pain (which is to be expected).

You will be pleased, flabbergasted, and possibly amused to hear that he was running around like a teenager last night doing chores and had to be constantly reminded that he had just had a medical procedure 😬

(It seems his super hero gene has kicked in 😎).

We have been assured by the doctor that he can do everything he physically wants to do and just stop when tired or sore and then rest. He has been instructed to keep on top of pain with medication and not to allow it to go too high before taking something ❤️

We managed a few hours back at Kai Iwi last night and he received two powerful karakia/healings. One from nephew Jake and another from cousin Alex. We continue to be blessed by the awesome whanau and friends that surround us and we are more grateful for this than mere words can express. ❤️🌈❤️

    A cute thing happened...

Anaru received his first gift of flowers yesterday from his good friend/sis Bunty. How lovely of her to gift him a pot of living daffodils: the symbol of springtime, new growth and beginnings, and regeneration. We are going to plant them at the homestead 🦋🐝 🌼

So today I drop my darling back home to the safety and love of you all and the energies of Kai Iwi and go back to Hamilton to pack up my things, hand in my notice at work and bid Haere Ra to my whanau there. I hope to be back home in Kai Iwi on Monday night (assuming all the mundane bits and pieces run smoothly).

I will try to post over this time what I can find out...we all know how Anaru keeps things to himself to protect those he loves but I will do my best to squeeze the information out 😉😂💗).

Much love to you all and thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you do and are doing.

    We love you

    Stace x

    Update!

The doctor has just been in and said they received a blood test back that shows signs of the primary in nerves that indicate the primary issue may be in the gut or pancreas.

There is another test that is a possibility but they will wait for the biopsy results before they decide if they need to do that.

This is all actually good news...we are getting closer to the primary cause and can then work out the plan of attack

    Breaking news

So Anaru is going to come with me to Hamilton to see our whanau and friends there.

We will be heading off this afternoon and coming back down either Monday or Tuesday.

I promise to look after him and not let him lift things bigger than the titanic 😉

Of course we will keep you posted of the road trip

New phone that's driving me mad and lots to do so I will post an update and photos later.

For now though Anaru is healthy and feeling well.

Will answer all your questions later xxx

What a full on few days we have had!

We got to Hamilton on Saturday and started packing up my stuff.

Sunday was more packing and sleeping with some deep breakthrough moments for us both which were both very emotional and empowering for us both ( this had been the first time we had actually been alone since we got the news).

The most wonderful thing I heard him say so far is 'I'm going to fight this!' As soon as I heard that I knew we were on the road to wellness.

Monday was a huge whirlwind of handing I. My notice at work (effective immediately) , informing my parents of our news and the move (later that day), picking IP hire vehicle, finishing packing, saying goodbye to family and friends as best we could and driving back to Kai Iwi!

I don't think we could have fitted in one more thing!

Today we unpacked the van and a friend of a friend drove it back to Hamilton for us (another amazing story in itself).

We half unpacked and semi sorted

.. Anaru saw a naturopath today and he has been given a powerful blend to work on the condition, along with Castor oil poultices. He is sound asleep and that is fantastic!

I have added some photos of some of our Waikato nearest and dearest who are also supporting us on this journey...this is by no means everyone, we are so blessed with the support, knowledge and love that surround us on All sides.

So I am off to bed for a big sleep.

Pomarie whanau, I will post more tomorrow.

    Love

    Stace

    22nd August

    We slept for twelve hours!

    Awesome!

Anaru is doing well today, Kai Iwi is working her magick on him with everyone and everything else it seems.

Specialist appointment for results of biopsy is next week so until then we are doing our thing ...

Lots of juicing and whole foods, naturopathic medicines, castor oil poultices, Kai Iwi water, rest, no stress, massage, energy healings, karakia, human and animal love, lol

He has eliminated alcohol, sugar, bad fats, red meat, tobacco and caffeine from his diet.

He is open to positive suggestions and good vibes.

He is looking good whanau; with your help and support I know we have got this!

    Much love

    Stace

    Xxx

    23rd August

    Anaru is resting today.

Went to bed at eight last night and still there.

    He is warm and comfortable.

    He is not in pain.

    He is just very tired.

He has had breakfast, porridge and toast.

He's taking his naturopathic medicines and uncle Tu is coming over later to start the kawakawa rongoa.
