Many of you will know and love Cheryl Waaka - nō Ngāpuhi, nō Ngāti Kahungunu ia— a former New Zealand Black Fern, rugby coach, Kaikohe, Northland rugby legend, māmā, and respected leader who has given tirelessly to our community through her mahi at Sport Northland and Northland Rugby. Cheryl is a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to rugby union.
Recently, Cheryl received a devastating diagnosis: stage 4 bowel cancer. She is now undergoing treatment, which includes Avastin, a life-prolonging chemotherapy drug that is not publicly funded in Aotearoa. The cost is significant — $70,000 for 12 cycles and associated costs following initial treatment. Cheryl is currently on leave while she focuses on resting, healing and spending precious time with her whānau.
