Paul is the only paralyzed motorcycle rider in NZ, who has been invited to compete in the Dream Bridgestone competition in Rome, Italy.
Auckland
8 years ago Paul Garrett was racing his motorcycle at Pukekohe Raceway when he and his bike were involved in a life changing crash which crushed his C4 vertebrae, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down.
In 2014, Paul decided to literally get back on the bike and found a way to ride and race again. With the help of his family and friends he decided to take on the challenge of beginning to race motorcycle's again.
The Dream Bridgestone Cup 2015 is the only race in the world for disabled motorcycle riders from around the world.
Paul is the only New Zealander to have been invited to attend this event on June 7th at the ACI Vallelunga Circuit, just outside of Rome, Italy.
The event is organized by the Di.Di (Diversamente Disabili) and 2015 is the second year that the event has been held.
Paul will need to bring the necessary equipment with him to ride, but the organizers have provided a motorcycle for him. Each rider will be classified by injury level and a handicap will be applied (the same which is used at the Paralympics).
Paul has attended various track days and is currently competing in the Auckland Motorcycle Club Summer Series.
Paul is the only paralyzed solo motorcycle rider in New Zealand who competes with able bodied riders. The event is to showcase the abilities and attitude of disabled motorcyclists, and to prove that the seemingly impossible can be achieved and enjoyed.
Funds will be used for Paul's airfares and accommodation.
AMCC Summer Series Round 5 6 May 2015
Final round of the Club Series and with double points up for grabs there was a great opportunity to win the Clubmans Championship. 3 third places. Unfortunately I scored the points but finished 1st equal on points. With the count back on wins Graeme Turner won the Championship and I finished 2nd.
However my personal best laptime dropped dramatically from the previous round to 1.15:19. To get into the 1 minute 15 bracket was a dream come true. The plan was to achieve this time in August so we are over the moon to be ahead of schedule. This time kicks me out of Clubmans and up to Formula 2. Wah Hoo.
Thanks to the team for looking after me. Could not ride without your help.
Need to concentrate on endurance now as the event in Italy has 170 corners in the race a huge jump from 36 corners in the Club races.
