Pete has suffered kidney stones for the last 20 years and now is off work awaiting kidney stone and partial kidney removal for 40mm stone.
Auckland
My partner Pete was stabbed in his right kidney outside a music concert when he was 19 by a 13 year old trying to get into a gang. This boy was given 60 hours of family counseling, Pete was given a life scentance of Kidney Stones forming in his right kidney.
About a year afterwards he started producing Kidney Stones and hasn’t stopped.
It has been a long hard road at times, many small stones and at times very large ones that have needed surgical assistance to pass, even partial removal of his kidney which surgeons thought would help stop stones from forming.
In early December Pete was admitted to emergency department with a kidney stone after presenting with a kidney infection. After doing a C.T scan, we were told that it was over 20mm and would be referred to Urology to discuss the best way to remove the stone. While waiting for an Urology appointment Pete developed a second infection mid January and was again admitted to hospital, this time a scan revealed the kidney stone had doubled in size to over 40mm!!
We met with the surgeons to discuss their plan, stone removal + partial removal of kidney that has been damaged :-(
He was told that he had been put on a high priority list because of the risk of infection with the stone and possible wait would be 4-6 weeks for surgery.
We received an outpatient appointment at the start of February for the 18th for what we thought would be a surgery date but on arrival found out it was to sign paperwork for surgery and told it would be another 6-8 weeks before he would get it.
As you can imagine this was a huge disappointment for us both. Pete has now been of work since mid December. He’s used all of his holiday pay even some in advance to keep us afloat. Because of the size of the stone he is finding every day tasks very hard and is in constant pain. I’m not one to ever ask for help but it is a constant stress and worry for us both financially. We have two lovely children, two cats, rent and many bills we have to pay each month.
AAC has never recognised his kidney stones as accidental, always medical but recently have had quite a few doctors mention that they think there is a link between the stabbing and his constant forming of stones. Any funds raised will help us also pay to see an independent Urology specialist who hopefully can help us with our journey to getting this reconised by AAC and hopefully better healthcare for him in the future.
Pete’s partner for 16 years
