Rebuilding PHATSN: A Tribute to Our Brother Kris and His Dream Car
Dear friends and whānau,
Thank you for taking the time to read and feel into this kaupapa—our heartfelt mission to bring a dream back to life.
We’re rebuilding a Datsun 1600 SSS—known as PHATSN—in honour of our brother Kris, a true Datsun enthusiast. Years ago, his dream car was stolen. He always wanted to rebuild it, but life got in the way, and he never had the chance.
Seven years ago, Kris passed away suddenly at just 33. He was in hospital awaiting assessment when he suffered a massive heart attack that damaged 90% of his heart. He was rushed to ICU and placed on life support. For eight days, we stayed by his side—grieving, remembering, and loving him deeply. Letting him go changed us forever.
This project is more than restoring a car—it’s about love, legacy, and finishing something Kris started. It’s our way of honouring him, healing, and keeping his spirit alive.
We still have his original plates: PHATSN. And now, we've finally found the perfect Datsun 1600—a dry-stored, low-rust gem with live rego. It's the ideal base to bring Kris’s dream to life.
With your support, we hope to rebuild PHATSN in his memory. Thank you for being part of this journey.
Ngāmihi,
Sean Malcolm and whānau
