Raising money for Piha families doing it tough this winter in the wake of Cyclone Gabrielle.
Auckland
As part of the Piha Matariki festival, we are raising money for Piha Families still doing it tough in the wake of Cyclone Gabrielle.
Piha is a very special place for so many. You might love the beach, bush walks, enjoy the surf, the hospitality or maybe it just holds a place in your heart.
If so, we'd love you to contribute to the fund and help support those who are falling through the cracks as a result of the impact of Cyclone Gabrielle.
There is a lack of government support for those waiting on insurance payouts and decisions about their land. They are stuck in limbo often paying both mortgage for a home they can't live in as well as rent.... and decisions may take years. On top of a cost of living crisis, it is and impossible situation, pushing families close to bankruptcy.
Your donation will go directly to families in need.
There will be a submission form sent out electronically among the community for people to either apply or nominate others to receive funds. There will be set criteria to identify need mainly focused around Red and Yellow stickered home owners/ occupiers and hardship. A small group has been formed to check and moderate submissions, overseen by an accountant for transparency.
The majority of payouts will be for equal amounts, however the moderation group can make exceptions under special circumstances if there is consensus.
The Piha R&R have kindly offered to accept the funds from GAL and distribute these as instructed.
I am a member of the community who set up the initial community GAL page and have been involved with the red cross post cyclone.
Money will go directly to families in need post Cyclone Gabrielle. Many of these people are waiting on decisions about their land and property have not had insurance payouts while continuing to pay both mortgages and rent.
