On February 1 2026, Pipiena Maka was enroute to Hawaii via Auckland when an infection in her leg required urgent treatment in NZ. She is currently in Auckland Hospital receiving the treatment for the infection which has spread to internal organs.
She has had several surgeries already and blood transfusion; treatments requiring ICU stay and ongoing observation in the orthopaedic ward. Currently, the doctors are unsure of how long she will be in hospital but have stated that her recovery will take some time due to the seriousness of her condition.
Auckland Hospital have graciously gone ahead with the treatment despite Pipiena not having travel insurance. This page is for those offering to donate to Pipiena’s medical costs so she can continue her journey home to Hawaii; for her siblings and other family members requesting an avenue that will allow them to assist financially. All funds will be given directly to Auckland Hospital.
The total cost of treatment is pending, an estimate of the sub total as it stands is the goal until treatment is completed and final invoice is received.

Third surgery completed 18 February 2026
Today Pipiena completed a skin graft surgery on her leg to repair the damage caused by the infection on her right leg. Doctors have said there were no issues during the procedure , will wait to see how it goes.
