Creating a forest in Bhutan
Wellington
We are creating a new forest in Bhutan.
Why?
So we can support a local community to reforest their surrounding countryside after it was felled about 70 years ago.
So that we can bring back biodiversity and reduce fire risk.
So we can sequester about 9 tons of carbon every year.
So that we can spark a revolution of greenery. It is a spectacular valley in one of the most beautiful places on earth - let's make it even more beautiful!!
We have an incredible farmer, Dorji, who has planted thousands of trees over the last couple of decades. We have land that the Royal Government of Bhutan has agreed to let us plant a permanent forest on. The land is barren with some small shrubs only. It used to be a forest about 80 years ago, but after it was felled, it never got a chance to spring back.
This is a community initiative. The local community are helping with planting and monitoring. This will be their forest.
Now we just need your support.
Dorji and his family are our good friends. He is leading the project along with his community.
We need to buy fencing to keep the beers and deer away from the saplings until they are big enough. We also need to put in piping from the local stream so that we can water the forest once a week for the first 4 or 5 years.
THANK YOU SO MUCH 6 August 2024
Dorji, Jichu and his community, Maia, Tara, Aoife and I - we are all so grateful for your incredible contributions. Thank you so much.
Planting has started.
1,470 saplings are in the ground!
