Baby Iyla, from Invercargill, is in Starship hospital in Auckland receiving treatment for large subglottic hemangioma.

Invercargill, Southland

Baby Iyla was born in Invercargill hospital in March 2023.

Her birth was traumatic, with mum hemorrhaging and Iyla requiring help to clear her airways and lungs.

After a few days in hospital, mum and baby doing well, the family returned home.

Iyla struggled with weight gain and feeding and around 8 weeks of age began having breathing problems.

Several visits to hospital, occasionally being admitted for 1-4 nights, she was diagnosed with croup and stridor, treated with steroids and adrenaline and sent home with promises of an ENT appointment.

Iyla continued to deteriorate, with more severe episodes of stridor, and occasionally stopping breathing.😔

Eventually she was transferred to Dunedin Hospital where after a few days she received two different diagnoses before being transferred to Auckland Starship hospital for further investigation, where yet another diagnosis is pending further investigation.

Her parents, Kahn and LaToya are with her in Auckland now. They are away from family support and attempting to navigate this in a big city, vastly different from their small home town.

Kahn began working in April, but off season began at the same time Iyla started experiencing her breathing issues.

Both of them have never been out of the South Island let alone to Auckland.

At the time of writing, diagnosis is uncertain, treatment uncertain and baby Iyla is being kept sedated. We have no idea how long Kahn and LaToya will need to remain in Auckland with Iyla's life in the balance.

Use of funds

Costs for Kahn and LaToya as they stay in Auckland for however long they need to be there.

10/08/23 Starship Hospital Auckland  10 August 2023

She's out of theatre & apparently it was pretty tiring for both her father & herself 🤦🤣

It's all good news though. Looking at being on the daily meds for a further 6 weeks and then she should be able to come off them ❤️

The good news received today for this throat mass, has caused relief and a positive feeling going forward for the temporal mass (checked at MRI scan end of this month). So, home again tomorrow :) a few appointments for the rest of the month, locally at the GP etc and the MRI is either the 24th or 28th.
