With another month gone since I posted, Jakobie had been fighting the OCD to get home, it's been 6 months and we have had challenging periods but he managed a trip home for 7 days at Christmas.

Back home, he could engage in normal day-to-day activities with his siblings and see grandparents and extended family members.

Being together as a family and watching Jakobie smile and laugh was the best Christmas gift for us all.

Since being back in the hospital he has been struggling, the days are long being school holidays, So Jakobie is currently staying in my apartment in Christchurch with his little brother and myself for added support and to encourage him to keep fighting, another home visit is scheduled on Friday 10th January for 5 days.

He is still eating, sleeping and resting well, therapy sessions are still in place.

We are currently looking into support in Dunedin for when Jakobie is discharged from Christchurch and returns home full time which we are hoping will be approaching soon.

The ocd is still very much there but he is healthy and trying his best.

I have learnt a lot about this mental illness along the way and with both Jakobies skills and knowledge he has been taught and what I now know I am sure to some extent we will be able to intercept the thoughts and urges as they arise.

I will be paying your generosity forward in the future to another family who is in need.

    Thank you

Happy New Year, stay safe and be kind to each other much love from our family to yours xx

Jakobie turned 13 on the 9/11 but due to his health was unable to get home to celebrate, Since then, Jakobies blood work has normalized and in the last couple of weeks we have seen a gradual increase in his weight which is helping fuel his body and mind.

Visitations have extended and he has managed to have some short periods in the weekend off the ward.

He is managing these outings very good and resisting the complusions.

Jakobie began EDMR therapy a couple of weeks ago and is coping well with his interactions with the specialists, EMDR can help people with OCD to identify and challenge the thoughts and beliefs that contribute to their OCD

He is now interacting with other children, doing well at health school and being able to sit to eat meals, rest when asked without having to get up and exercise.

Each day is completely different, continuing to remind Jakobie to delay his response to perform a compulsive behaviour by letting some time elapse till the thought passes, this is difficult and causes some distress, but he is trying really hard.

The goal is to get home for Christmas with family and see some friends for a few days if possible, so we are doing everything we can to support Jakobie to make this happen.

I don’t wish this mental illness on anyone it’s been a heartbreaking journey to witness, Let alone be living with it like Kobie is, we are into our 5th month in Hospital this is so emotionally challenging for everyone and also very frustrating that there is not a cure.

WHAT IS OCD? Excessive thoughts (obsessions) that lead to repetitive behaviours (compulsions).

These thoughts are different for everybody.

For Jakobie his thoughts are telling him he must do intense cardio workouts eg. Press-ups, burpees, star jumps, lunges, headstands, and anything that will burn calories. His condition is severe and life-threatening, as it is affecting his ability to eat, drink, sit and sleep.

From what we can gather so far from Jakobie his thoughts are telling him he must do these if he wants to be healthy, strong and be the best.

WHY? We don’t know our brains are powerful things; he is just super stuck on repeat with exercise as his only priority.

WILL HE BE CURED? No, but with intense exposure therapy like learning to sit instead of pressups etc and medication Jakobie will learn to be able to sit with with his thoughts in the future and realise nothing bad will happen if he does not follow through with the compulsions.

Although we have been doing this since the start of his admission the medication is not subsiding his thoughts enough to allow therapy to be retained.

IS IT JUST THE EXERCISE HE IS DOING? No, this is our main concern currently as it is putting his direct health at risk and is what we need to try and prevent so he can live, but Jakobie is displaying many different compulsions (rituals)

Like spinning, tapping things, kicking things, flipping things the list goes on, as well as tics like grunting, spitting, eye twitching etc

    X

WOW, thank you for the massive amount of generosity so far as well as messages of love support and encouragement towards Jakobie, kiptyn and myself. I’m completely lost for words, to read these comments and see how many people are standing behind Jakobie during this nightmare of a journey makes us feel not so alone. Thank you for making a difference and spreading the word - we couldn’t do it without you x

I thought the journey had been hard enough so far, with three months in the hospital. Within this time, Jakobie began to progress to the point where he was able to eat three meals a day, attend health school on-site for two small sessions a day, and sit during certain periods per his treatment plan with guidance, encouragement, and assistance.

I was getting smiles again, he was fighting back to get home.

2 weeks ago Jakobies progress relapsed and we started to witness a rapid decline in his health and push back against the treatment plan, it felt as if all the hard work from the past 3 months had gone out the window leaving me including his team feeling deflated the obsessions and compulsions have intensified.

His blood results are concerning, indicating his internal health is compromised, which now means Jakobie can no longer leave the ward, and visitation is minimal, needing professionals to monitor him 24/7 again.

This is going to be a marathon, not a sprint, my unique wee man has the strength within us all to keep him fighting.

Aroha nui - Jakobie, Jolani & Kiptyn x
