Mosgiel, Otago

In June 2024, Mosgiel boy Jakobie, 12 , diagnosed 6y ago with ADHD, began displaying some unusual behaviors, these behaviors progressed quickly which started to impact his health, family life and education.

Jakobie ended up in the ed at Dunedin Hospital where he was sedated and sectioned for assessment at Waikari hospital.

After the initial assessment Jakobie was taken to Christchurch where there is a specialized Children Mental health facility.

Ongoing assessment of Jakobies symptoms took place , MRI scans of his brain and a lumber puncture to assist with a diagnosis.

Jakobie will remain at this facility for treatment and has since been diagnosed with severe OCD, possibility of Tourette’s syndrome plus

This once outgoing, social happy young boy, who was a keen football player in his community and enjoyed making memories with his family, has been robbed of his ability to live the life he once did.

Jakobie is still critical but in stable condition , due to his age it is vital for his family to be there to assist with his treatment plan which consists of a range of medication and Therapy.

This been emotionally challenging to jakobie and his family

unwanted stress on the financial side of things with jakobies mum Jolani not being able to work her usual hours, having to be in Christchurch and leaving her other son in the care of his grandfather in Mosgiel.

and I want to extend my sincere appreciation to you all for contribution in easing the finical burden we have been faced, the messages and the loving support I needed the most to not feel so alone.  8 January 2025

With another month gone since I posted, Jakobie had been fighting the OCD to get home, it's been 6 months and we have had challenging periods but he managed a trip home for 7 days at Christmas.

Back home, he could engage in normal day-to-day activities with his siblings and see grandparents and extended family members.

Being together as a family and watching Jakobie smile and laugh was the best Christmas gift for us all.

Since being back in the hospital he has been struggling, the days are long being school holidays, So Jakobie is currently staying in my apartment in Christchurch with his little brother and myself for added support and to encourage him to keep fighting, another home visit is scheduled on Friday 10th January for 5 days.

He is still eating, sleeping and resting well, therapy sessions are still in place.

We are currently looking into support in Dunedin for when Jakobie is discharged from Christchurch and returns home full time which we are hoping will be approaching soon.

The ocd is still very much there but he is healthy and trying his best.

I have learnt a lot about this mental illness along the way and with both Jakobies skills and knowledge he has been taught and what I now know I am sure to some extent we will be able to intercept the thoughts and urges as they arise.

I will be paying your generosity forward in the future to another family who is in need.

Thank you

Happy New Year, stay safe and be kind to each other much love from our family to yours xx
