Let’s come together to support Jolani and her family in their time of need. Thank you for your kindness and generosity!
Mosgiel, Otago
In June 2024, Mosgiel boy Jakobie, 12 , diagnosed 6y ago with ADHD, began displaying some unusual behaviors, these behaviors progressed quickly which started to impact his health, family life and education.
Jakobie ended up in the ed at Dunedin Hospital where he was sedated and sectioned for assessment at Waikari hospital.
After the initial assessment Jakobie was taken to Christchurch where there is a specialized Children Mental health facility.
Ongoing assessment of Jakobies symptoms took place , MRI scans of his brain and a lumber puncture to assist with a diagnosis.
Jakobie will remain at this facility for treatment and has since been diagnosed with severe OCD, possibility of Tourette’s syndrome plus
This once outgoing, social happy young boy, who was a keen football player in his community and enjoyed making memories with his family, has been robbed of his ability to live the life he once did.
Jakobie is still critical but in stable condition , due to his age it is vital for his family to be there to assist with his treatment plan which consists of a range of medication and Therapy.
This been emotionally challenging to jakobie and his family
unwanted stress on the financial side of things with jakobies mum Jolani not being able to work her usual hours, having to be in Christchurch and leaving her other son in the care of his grandfather in Mosgiel.
Reaching out to friends, family, and community to offer any support possible. Every contribution, will help with essential needs
Friends whose children have know each other from babies, whom go to the same school, same class
To meet financial burdens Jakobies family have been faced with, contribution towards accommodation costs in Christchurch and travel so it is possible his family can visit him during this challenging time.

We are seeing some progress....... I cant thank you all enough for continuing to support Jakobie and our family through this page and caring thoughtful messages xx 7 December 2024
Jakobie turned 13 on the 9/11 but due to his health was unable to get home to celebrate, Since then, Jakobies blood work has normalized and in the last couple of weeks we have seen a gradual increase in his weight which is helping fuel his body and mind.
Visitations have extended and he has managed to have some short periods in the weekend off the ward.
He is managing these outings very good and resisting the complusions.
Jakobie began EDMR therapy a couple of weeks ago and is coping well with his interactions with the specialists, EMDR can help people with OCD to identify and challenge the thoughts and beliefs that contribute to their OCD
He is now interacting with other children, doing well at health school and being able to sit to eat meals, rest when asked without having to get up and exercise.
Each day is completely different, continuing to remind Jakobie to delay his response to perform a compulsive behaviour by letting some time elapse till the thought passes, this is difficult and causes some distress, but he is trying really hard.
The goal is to get home for Christmas with family and see some friends for a few days if possible, so we are doing everything we can to support Jakobie to make this happen.
I don’t wish this mental illness on anyone it’s been a heartbreaking journey to witness, Let alone be living with it like Kobie is, we are into our 5th month in Hospital this is so emotionally challenging for everyone and also very frustrating that there is not a cure.
