I badly need help to afford the simple protection my precious beehives need to keep the deadly Varroa mite away.
Otago
My name is Giles Cochrane, and my bees are my life. My mental issues have made it difficult to hold a job, and so I hope to turn my beekeeping hobby into a fully sustaining business, enabling me to become fully independant and free of government handouts. Unfortunately, due to recent financial problems, I find myself struggling to find the money to pay for the special medicated strips my hives need to protect them from the Varroa mite, a devastating pest that has come to New Zealand in the last fews years, killing or crippling untold numbers of hives (it's scientific name is Varroa destructor for a reason!). The cost of providing all of my hives with protection is around $1500, and even if I don't make that mark, anything you can spare would be gratefully appreciated.
Funds will go towards paying for the special medicated strips my hives need to keep Varroa at bay; any extra will go towards nutritional supplements for those hives that have already been weakened by it.
