My sister has an aggressive, incurable brain tumour and we really need your help
Auckland
On Jan 30, 2022, my then 42-yr-old sister, Mandy suffered four sudden seizures within 20 minutes. An ambulance rushed her in a coma to Auckland Hospital. A CT scan and MRI confirmed our worst fears - an incurable brain tumour.
Mandy had brain surgery a month later and on Mar 12, the results were confirmed to us: grade 4 Glioblastoma.
Mandy began chemotherapy & radiotherapy and has been through numerous rounds of chemo plus two courses of radiation (the max possible). This course of treatment is now proving ineffective, so different and partly unfunded drugs (Avastin & Irinotecan) are required to prolong Mandy’s life.
Until the day of the seizures, Mandy lived with her amazing children, Oliver (15) and Emily (13). Mandy can no longer work to provide for her family and needs 24/7 support of an adult, so she and the kids now live with our retired parents.
The financial strain is immense, and now with needing to cover the costs of unfunded medications, this incredibly stressful & traumatic situation has been made so much worse.
We don’t know what the next few months or years will look like, so all we can do is hope for the best, stay positive, enjoy our time together & care for Mandy as best we can.
Funds contributed will go towards the cost of medications required now and any in future that are not publicly funded or covered under Mandy’s limited medical insurance.
Any assistance will be so much appreciated, and our family will be forever grateful for any contribution big or small.
Mandy is my older sister and only sibling.
Funds raised will be used to help pay for medications not publicly funded or covered by medical insurance.
Update on Mandy's new treatment and progress 8 July 2023
Hi everyone,
Another huge thank you again for all the generous donations that have helped immensely with contributing towards Mandy's treatment. The great news is that after 4 infusions, Mandy has experienced huge improvements in her mobility and mental clarity, so it appears the new chemo is proving effective for her!!
We are still awaiting the results of an MRI she had a few weeks back - which we’re hoping will confirm the tumour has regressed - but during a recent appointment with her Oncologist he called her “remarkable” in regard to the improvements evident so far; so, fingers crossed this is a sign of things to come.
Your contributions have covered these first 4 infusions of Avastin and Irinotecan and we could not be more thankful and grateful for you all.
Thanks again,
Emma on behalf Mandy & family
