Help our dog walk again

  • Mika’s splint is finally off!

      16 December 2025

It’s been a couple of weeks since she’s had her splint removed. She’s doing really well and able to bear weight with seemingly no issues. We have just recently taken her for a walk around the block with her brace on the other leg and it went well! She was so happy to be able to sniff all the familiar smells around the neighbourhood again. During the day she’s able to hear weight on her other affected leg but for going outside with brace the other leg up for extra security and comfort. Again, thanks to all that we’re able to help Mika gain confidence in one of her legs. You’ve made such an improvement to her life ♥️

  • X-rays Tuesday

Mika has had her splint on for 8 weeks now and we are due to have an X-ray to see how well her carpal is healing. This will determine whether she can have the splint removed and possibly start bearing some weight. She’s doing great though, she has been comfortable on her leg until this week when she formed a wee sore from the pressure and friction of the splint. She’s on antibiotics now as bacteria was found. She’s back to her old self today and the wound looks a lot less angry.

Will update when her cast has been removed!

  • First look at leg

Unfortunately Mikas splint feel off whilst I was carrying her back from the toilet but it was a good opportunity to see what her leg looked like under her bandage before we took her back to the vet to get re-bandaged. She’s doing really well, it’s hard for her being in the crate but she has lots of cuddles and stimulation toys in the crate. She also doesn’t need her cone anymore!

  • Mika’s first legs surgery is done

      4 October 2025

Mika has had her first leg operated on. She’s recovering well and managing to toilet and eat normally. Unfortunately due to how delicate the operation and how crucial it is to allow the fusion of the joint she is crate bound for 6 weeks and has her Elizabethan collar on until suture removal (2 weeks). She is understandably a sad wee doggo. We are looking into things that can stimulate her brain a wee bit so she doesn’t feel like she’s missing out.

Again, thank you to those who have donated. Once her left leg has healed we will be operating on her right so she can live that zoomy life again.

Will post another update when she has her splint off in the coming weeks.

Lots of love to you and Mika. We just had Maple fixed they gave her a soft cone which was much more comfortable for her! Highly recommended if you can get your hands on one 🩷

Thanks for the update! Also chiming in with the donut collar recommendation! Our spitz was seemingly paralyzed when wearing the plastic cone after her spay, we thought she must be in such pain. Then we tried a donut collar and suddenly she could move/toilet/eat/sleep without any issue at all! I really do highly recommend!

Thanks for this wonderful advice, I never knew they existed! Off to get her one tomorrow. Do either of you have links to ones you used?

Thanks to each and every one of you for your kindness in our pursuit to get Mika walking again. She is booked in to have one of her legs operated on on the 1st of October. In the meantime she is doing well with her braces and has better mobility since using them. She is still missing out on her walkies with her big sister so hopefully that’s not too far away!

We got some braces for Mika today to try out to make it more comfortable for her to walk around. She is very apprehensive at the moment but hopefully they can allow her to feel a bit more like her old self. Thank you to everyone who has donated so far. We are astonished at the love and generosity of you all.

We are off to see the orthopaedic specialists on Monday at Massey for a consultation to see how long it’ll be till we can operate. Mika is in splints for short/medium term she seems to be managing ok on one leg but still not weight-bearing on the other.

    Will keep you posted 🐾
