Sara needs urgent CAR-T cell therapy (not available in NZ) to suppress her blood cancer
Narrow Neck, Auckland
In early 2023 Sara (then 46) was surprised to learn that she had broken a couple of ribs doing high-intensity moves at her usual exercise class. This was her first symptom that led to a devastating diagnosis a few months later - an aggressive form of the blood cancer multiple myeloma.
Since then, Sara has had regular chemotherapy, two stem cell transplants, radiotherapy (she is having more now) and tried a number of drugs. She has approached each treatment with courage, grace and gratitude to all of her health providers. Each of these treatments have initially shown promise, but ultimately failed to suppress the disease for longer than a few months each time.
Sara’s specialists have run out of options in New Zealand. They have told us that her best hope is now urgent CAR-T cell therapy in Shanghai. The cost for this treatment is around $400,000, not including flights and accommodation.
Sara is a beloved and devoted daughter to her elderly mother, who she moved in with to support in 2020. Both have been distressed to find Sara become the one who needs looking after. She is a dearly loved sister and sister-in-law, closely involved and loved aunt, and cherished friend. Her family’s greatest wish is that Sara is able to raise a toast at her 50th birthday, and dance at her nephew’s wedding in a few years’ time.
Please help us to raise funds to get Sara the treatment she needs by donating and/or sharing this page. Any contribution helps and is greatly appreciated!
