Michelle needs surgery to help correct her scoliosis and straighten her spine.
International
Michelle was diagnosed in August 2017, aged 17 with scoliosis. The diagnosis came as a huge shock. We had no awareness of scoliosis nor its long term effects.
Michelle's spine is in the shape of an S. Her thoracic curve is 55 degrees and her lumbar curve is 45 degrees. The doctor said that her curves will further progress with 1-2 degrees every year. They have recommended full spinal fusion to curb the further progression. Fusion is a very invasive procedure and a long recovery time of 3-6 months. This is a last resort for us.
Shell shocked we started reading about scoliosis and did heaps of research. VBT sounded like a better option than fusion, but Michelle is too old for this method. We have therefore opted for ASC (anterior scoliosis correction), which uses the same methodology as VBT but is designed for mature patients. ASC is less invasive and will leave her with more flexibility and the recovery time is 6 weeks.
The downside is that there are only a dosen of surgeons worldwide that performs this procedure on mature patients. We have decided on a clinic in Germany. Michelle's surgery is scheduled for the 9th of July 2018. The medical bills, amounting to €47,000, has to be paid 3 weeks before the surgery date. Unfortunately our medical insurance doesn't cover any of our costs.
The mere thought of the surgery on our youngest is petrifying, but doing nothing is not on option. Wait and see is not an option.
Having to ask for assistance is a humbling experience, but if it helps Michelle, we want to fly a big SOS flag. Please help us to have Michelle's back.
This is to help Michelle to get the ASC surgery in Germany to correct her scoliosis
To pay for the medical bills and travel expenses
Michelle - 3 weeks post op 30 July 2018
Hi everyone,
Michelle, James and I would like to thank each and everyone for your love, support, prayers and well wishes.
This has been quite a journey and with your help and support it has been made a bit easier.
We are very pleased with the outcome and progress so far. The curve correction is over 50%. I have attached the latest X-Ray. We were super stoked with the results. She has 8 screws and the nylon tether which should keep the spine in place and prevent further progression. In fact it should over time straighten a bit more. It will also leave her with flexibility and the ability to do almost anything that she could do before surgery.
This is opposed to traditional fusion that would have left her with 16 screws and two steel rods with all the bones that would over time fuse together - leaving her less flexible, but also in risk of second surgery.
Michelle is recovering very well and is getting stronger everyday.
She still can't sit, stand or walk for too long and is taking it slow. She is obviously still uncomfortable and sore, but she is off all the pain medications. It was making her sick and we stopped the strong pain medication 1 week post op. She started feeling so much better after that.
We are seeing the surgeon again next week and hopefully he will be as pleased with the progress as we are.
We will keep you posted.
All our love,
Michelle, James and René
