After fighting tirelessly over the last year, Alison has one last chance to buy some time and we need your support.
Northland
In February 2020, our amazing mum, wife, nanny and friend Alison Dobbs was diagnosed with Stage-4 Metastatic Lung Cancer with Secondary Cancer in her Pelvis bone.
Alison bravely faced her first attempt at chemo alone at the start of Lockdown in April 2020. This treatment had to be stopped due to renal impairment (kidney damage). She was offered a second attempt earlier this year, but unfortunately, this wasn’t successful.
After being declined the opportunity of trial treatment, her final option is an unfunded immunotherapy treatment that comes at an eye-watering cost of $8,000 - $10,000 per month!! Without this treatment, Alison's life expectancy is 3-6 months.
We are meeting with mum's Oncologist in two weeks to decide which of the following unfunded Immunotherapy option is best suited to mum;
.....1. Pembrolizumab (brand name Keytruda)
.....2. Nivolumab (brand name Opdivo)
.....3. Atezolizumab (brand name Tecentriq).
We will make a page update to let donors know what the treatment is once it has been confirmed.
Alison has fought this battle with incredible positivity and strength, and she wants to keep on fighting. She has conceded that she needs a ‘little bloody help’ (which is not in her nature), and we, her whānau, cannot afford to do this alone, so we’re reaching out.
All of us who have turned up at Alison and Kelvin’s door would have experienced their manaakitanga. This carried over into their work for the community organisations and establishments they dedicated much of their lives to providing hospitality and service. Our hope is, if we spread the word to the countless people who have received their generosity, we can add to the offers of support we have had already to raise as much as we can to pay for treatment so we can all share a little more time with Alison.
By contributing, you are helping us give Alison a bloody good crack at more time, with quality of life, and we appreciate that from the bottom of our hearts.
Thank you.
We are Alison's whānau; husband, children and grandchildren.
Any money donated will be used for Alison’s treatment, currently not funded in New Zealand.
End of year update on Alison 29 December 2021
Kia ora everyone,
Before we see the back of 2021, we wanted to say a belated Merry Xmas to you all. And thank you for the support you have given Alison and us this year, through the givealittle page, in person and via lovely messages.
Mum's had a bit of a rough ride this year. She was advised to take a break from treatment after her first bout of the non-funded targeted treatment landed her in hospital. It coincided with Lockdown, meaning she couldn't have visitors. The whole experience took a toll on her, and her specialist decided to discontinue treatment.
However, a scan a few weeks later showed significant shrinkage of her lung cancer! So, although it was hard going and she only had a small portion of it - these results came as an unbelievably welcome surprise. Best of all, it gave mum a really positive lift both physically and mentally.
This break has given her a chance to get back to feeling more like herself. It's also given her the energy to catch up with family and friends - and have lots of belly laughs this Xmas - which is priceless.
A scan in November showed slight growth in her existing cancers and some new growth (dang it!), so she will resume targeted therapy treatment in mid-Jan 2022.
Thanks to every one of you, this is possible, and we wanted to share how much we appreciate your support.
We wish you all a happy New Year and hope 2022 brings you and your loved ones good health.
Cheers!
Alison's whanau X
