Help me get to Taiwan for the 2016 President's Cup Schoolboys Boxing Tournament

  • Mission Accomplished!

I got a bye in the preliminary round and entered the President's Cup tournament in the Under 19 Youth Male 75kg quarter-finals, which I won unanimously on points, 3:0, followed by a semi-final win by unanimous 3:0 points decision.

In the final I met an experienced 18yo Youth boxer from Taiwan (who will be representing the Chinese-Taipei boxing team at next month's AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships 2016 in Russia).

My final in Taiwan was the toughest battle I've had for a while - he was a strong opponent. But I felt fitter than him, was able to use my experience.

The final was a hard contest, but I came away with another unanimous 3:0 points decision win.

I would like to acknowledge my coache(s) and thank all my supporters, including Coach Lo and the team from Pingtung that looked after me throughout the tournament and assited me with everything, Williams Fu who made it all possible, Tommy Chen of Inxtron for the hospitality in Taipei, Akitio.com for the airfare sponsorship to Taiwan, Dean at Roundabout Distributors, Mandy and the team at Recreational Services (Waipapa), my brother James, and Sumin, and my Mum and the people of Wairoa, Ya-Chieh and all my family in Taiwan, Rex Jenkins and family and the Central North Island Boxing Association, Auckland Boxing Association, Fili Maka and family, Greg & Kylee for help with accommodation in Auckland, the Robin Thorin Trust in Northland for their substantial support throughout 2016, Countdown supermarket (Waitangi), Liz Osokin for her long-term campaign support, all my friends at Kerikei High School and everywhere, Paul my old rugby coach, all those who donated on Givalittle, my Dad, and especially my coach Rusty Porter at Kaeo Boxing Club and the team at Northland Boxing Gym.

I've just arrived in Hong Kong after an 11 hour flight from Auckland. It's early morning here, overcast but sticky-hot already. I'm on my way to Taipei in a couple of hours, then down to south Taiwan on Friday for the President's Cup boxing championship 22-26 October 2016. I would like to acknowledge all my supporters via Givealittle, especially Roundabout Distributors, Recreational Services and my brother James, the "special" anonymous donor from Wairoa, and also Akitio.com for my airfares, the Robin Thorin Trust, Countdown supermarket (Waitangi), Liz Osokin, Paul (my old rugby coach), Rusty Porter (my boxing coach), my Mum, and my family in Taiwan. We did it! Thank you all!

  • Boxing: Focus and form pays off again for Kyle Chen

NORTHLAND AGE / 2 SEPT 2016: Kyle Chen cleaned up in his division at the Australian Golden Gloves championships in Queensland last Thursday.

With coach Rusty Porter in his corner representing the Waipapa-based Northland Boxing Gym, Chen claimed the 75kg Junior Male Open title at the championships, which were held at the Acacia Ridge Hotel.

The Kerikeri High School Year 11 student's first fight was a semi-final last Wednesday where he defeated Jackson McMahon (current Queensland champ) by a third round TKO. Porter said Chen stopped McMahon with some "beautiful head and body shots" in bout 39 on the day's card.

The win allowed the 15-year-old Haruru Falls fighter to advance to the final against Rory Booth, a ACT champion, in the day's 12th bout, with Chen winning all three rounds via a unanimous points decision. Porter wasn't surprised at the result, considering the focus and form Chen took into the event.

"Chen fought really well. He's focused, been training well," he said, noting there wasn't much sightseeing done on their Australian sojourn.

"First day it was box, eat, sleep, second day, box, eat, sleep again, come home."

    - Porter and Chen plan to be in Kaitaia for the third annual fundraising fight night for the proposed Te Hiku sports complex at Te Ahu Centre on Saturday, September 10. Porter has trained a number of fighters for that event while son Mike will be fighting in the top of the card. A preview will feature next week.
