Help us protect Aotearoa | New Zealand's iconic and endangered species by maintaining a safe haven for them to flourish at Mahakirau.
Located on the crest of the Coromandel ranges, in an area categorised as having ‘Outstanding Wildlife Value’ and rated 'Internationally Significant' by IUCN, the Mahakirau Sanctuary project is a great example of community initiative helping to build identity for our future generations through a love and understanding of Aotearoa | New Zealand’s biodiversity
by connecting our tamariki | children to the natural world
by advocating for the protection of our most endangered living taonga | treasures
by bringing communities together through tiaki taiao | environmental protection
by creating a place where academic research can work along aside education to expand our understanding of our national biodiversity
and by, most importantly, ensuring our endemic wildlife has a safe haven to thrive.
After 20 years of intense community led conservation, the Mahakirau Forest is a recognised mainland sanctuary that provides a protected home for some of Aotearoa’s rarest and most endangered species, including the Archey's and Hochstetter's frogs, the uniquely Coromandel Northern Striped gecko, kiwi, kaka, falcon, fernbird and the increasingly rare Forest Ringlet butterfly - claimed to be on the brink of extinction [featured image].
