Please join our 100:10 Club. That is, 100 people donating $10 per month, for Ken & Ko. to provide a free meal to 100-150 homeless people every week. To donate, please click the DONATE button on this page.

We, Ken and Karen, decided it was the right thing for us to help our Auckland Central homeless community by simply providing a street-meal for them once a week - outside the Auckland Public Library at 8pm, every Tuesday.

To sustain this service, we need your help please. - We need to generate at least $300 per week, to purchase the ingredients and supplies (disposable plates, cutlery, and rubbish bags) necessary to make and serve this meal.

After providing meals for over 20-weeks now, we have found the menu that works best is: Vegetarian Soup (Mushroom, Vegetable, or Leek & Potato), Egg Sandwiches, Cheese Sandwiches, Desert - Ambrosia, or Donut Cake/Whipped Cream, or Chocolate Brownie/Whipped Cream, and Raro Orange Drink.

This menu works really well because, our guests have provided us with feed-back that confirms it meets their needs (e.g. many have issues with teeth and health, that mean certain foods work better than others), and it is possible for Ken and Karen to be able to prepare (at home), transport, and serve 100-150 people with a high quality, tasty, and nutritious home-made meal.

When we arrive to serve the meal, each Tuesday, a number of the guests will help us to setup two trestle tables, moving the food from our cars to the tables. Ken serve's the soup from the 50lt pot, two volunteers (usually Kathryn and Jonathan - two university students) serve the sandwiches, and Karen serves the desert. One of our guests helps with serving the orange drink. Another guest will help with collecting rubbish. The Auckland City Council, support the meal, by removing rubbish for us, and helping to keep the area clean with their street cleaning equipment.

There are other charities, groups, or individuals like Ken and Karen, that provide other street-meals, at different times across a week - but there is no organisation overseeing this. There is some proactive collaboration between these groups in order to help ensure there are a number of street meals available to help those in need. And, organisations such as the Mission, and Salvation Army, also work to help those in need.

We all choose how we help others, and there are many charities. If you choose to support the meal we are providing, we (Ken and Karen) can assure you that 100% of the funding you provide us will go into providing a nutritious hot meal to 150 homeless people in Central Auckland New Zealand, each week. We are personally committed to helping in this way, and we would be very thankful for any financial support to make this sustainable for us over the long-term.

The 100:10 Club was suggested to us by a good friend. To have 100 people donating $10 per month will ensure that we can sustainably assist 100-150 of our fellow citizens by providing them with a free home-made hot meal once a week.

Use of funds

100% of donated money will be used to provide a home-cooked hot meal for 100-150 homeless people once a week, at 8pm every Tuesday night in Auckland City Centre.

Ken & Ko. handing over to another Group  11 August 2021

To our regular Give-a-Little donors, *please cancel* your automated donation payments with immediate effect.

After 41 weeks, serving 6150 free meals to those in need, Ken & Ko. will pass the baton on to another volunteer group to provide the Auckland Central City Street Meal on a Tuesday evening. Ken & Ko.'s last meal service will be on Tuesday 17th August.

We want to thank our volunteers, Jonathan, Catherine, H., Anna, William, Jack, and several others here and there, for turning-up and helping us serve the meals. We also want to thank the Sunday Blessings Group, who helped us get started, mentored us at times, and assisted us in successfully applying for some Council funding. Thanks too, to St Kents who assisted with a regular supply of bread rolls, and other donations including second-hand sleeping bags, socks, and hats. And we also want thank you all, our Give a Little donors, for all your support both financial and personal. You have been our cheer leaders, and we could not have done it without you!! Thank you!

We have got so much out of this experience; we look forward to doing more in the future. We will miss interacting and supporting our guests. They have really inspired us. Helping them has been a pleasure. Their gratitude, at times, has been overwhelming. And, for now, it’s time for us to take a break. Some stats:

$19,402.91 spent to deliver 6150 meals,

$3.15 per three course meal, typically - Soup, Cheese/Garlic Oven Hot Bread Rolls, Egg Bread Rolls, Ambrosia Desert + orange drink.

$2,500 Council Grant received – thank you

$2,220 Give a Little Donations received via 79 donations – thank you!!

We will now arrange the closure of our Give a Little Page.
