  • Orchard Grave Restoration Underway

      26 September 2023
    Main image

Whilst all other unmarked graves were grass plots, the Orchard family plot had a cracked concrete base and walls and a wrought iron fence.

In consultation with Orchard descendants, who have generously funded the much needed restoration, the back wall has been rebuilt, the base removed. It will be covered in top soil then planted in flowers.

The ORCHARD family immigrated from England, arriving in Lyttleton 1850 on the “Randolph” one of the “first 4 ships”. They worked as carpenters in Christchurch before taking up land in Waikuku. Fourth son – Edward and his family moved to Pukerau about 1886 where they were involved in coal mining and farming in the Pukerau area until 1920. Their second son – also called Edward, a daughter and two granddaughters are buried at Pukerau. The son - Edward - served in the South African War 1889 -1902.

Son Ernest Henry, who served at Gallipoli, tragically died 1917 after a motor car accident at Rangiora. Oldest daughter Alice married local farmer Hugh Yorston Sinclair. Youngest daughter Ivy married Calvin Edward Kenrick. Alice and Ivy and their families lived in the Mosgiel area. Edward and family moved from Pukerau to Cust - where daughter Jessica and Edward's widow (Nellie) married into the Miles family.

The Orchard family were respected pioneers held in high esteem in the district. Read about the family's farewell from the Benio district in Papers Past: https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/ME19130524.2.65

This year the service was held in the school library appropriately facing the memorial wall, with morning tea also at the school. Thank you to Bruce Catto for acknowledging the service board at the Cemetery, which many took the time to visit. Veteran's graves and memorials at Pukerau Cemetery will be marked with wreaths. • April - Honouring those that served

      13 April 2023
    Main image

Local men, previously unrecognised, are now recognised at Pukerau Cemetery including:

    - William Henry Purvis McKENZIE (1888–1958) son of Alexander McKenzie Jnr. and Jessie (née McCrombie) of Pukerau educated at Otago University, and then - with a scholarship - at Princeton Theological Seminary in the USA. He only failed to graduate because, when WW1 broke out, he travelled to Scotland and joined the Scottish Light Horse. He went on to earn a distinguished war record (awarded the M.C.& Bar). He returned to New Zealand and took his B.A. at Otago University. See https://www.aucklandmuseum.com/war-memorial/online-cenotaph/record/208984

    - Thomas ROGERSON (1872-1917), oldest son of Samuel Rogerson and Janet (née Blacklock) of Otaraia, apprenticed to the engineering trade in Dunedin before joining the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand. Thomas was the Chief Engineer on the ship “Aparima” during WW1 when it was taken over by the Imperial authorities. 1917, when travelling from London to Wales to take on a load of coal, a German U-boat 40 fired a torpedo into the Aparima's port side, and within 8 minutes the Aparima sunk. Of the 110 crew onboard, 56 were tragically lost including Thomas. See https://www.aucklandmuseum.com/war-memorial/online-cenotaph/record/96488

The Pukerau Cemetery Support Group Trust is working with the Gore District Council on information to go inside the shelter. This will include a service memorial board - mentioning those who were born and educated in the district who served overseas along with the many men who were employed locally by businesses including farms, stores, and the railways when they were called for service. Included are those mentioned on the honours board at Pukerau School (see photo); men and women from Arthurton, Benio, Kaiwera, and Otaraia; and those who served in the earlier South African War and later Vietnam War.

      16 March 2022
    Main image

The Pukerau Cemetery Support Group Trust planned a special event on 24th April. However, due to COVID, we have taken the decision to postpone until Sunday 6th November 2022 when we anticipate larger numbers of people can gather safely.

We sincerely invite you to be present for this special occasion. Please keep the date free, let us know if you plan to attend, and share this information/invitation with your family and friends.

Should you be coming from out of town consider reserving accommodation soon, as we are aware of a Conference in Gore on 4-5th November. Local Motels and Bed & Breakfasts are presently all fully available. Croydon Lodge may not be.

We aim to start the event at 1 pm at Pukerau Cemetery with blessings first at the Catholic Block, then at the main entrance, opening the kiosk, and viewing the improvements before adjourning to Pukerau Hall for speeches and afternoon tea. • New signage at Pukerau Cemetery entrances

      26 February 2022
    Main image

Gore District Council erected new signage at the main entrance to Pukerau Cemetery this week, with similar signage erected at the Catholic block before Christmas.

The previous sign (thought to have been made by Russell France & installed about 1981 for Pukerau School's 100th Jublilee), had rotted and unfortunately could not be restored.

Council has also reformed the entrance to make it usable in all weather. Considerable excavation allowed sold fill, then "Garden Cell" pavers to be laid, before the area was covered with topsoil, ready for sewing out in grass.

We will post another photo once the grass is established.

  • Restoration of Flora Macnee’s headstone

      27 January 2022
    Main image

We are pleased to report the completion of the restoration and relaying of Flora Macnee’s headstone. Donations from Flora’s descendants have covered the costs involved. The Gore District Council will level the ground around the headstone and plant grass in conjunction with other planned work at Pukerau Cemetery.

The Macnee family were residents in the Pukerau area at the time Flora died in 1897. Her daughter’s activities are reported by the Mataura Ensign in 1896 with their talents arranging the Pukerau Spinster’s Ball, as well as performing on the piano and singing at a concert in Pukerau.

Flora Jane Currie ROBERTSON was born on the Isle of Arran, Scotland in 1832. Aged 25 (1858) she married James MacNee (McNie) and they had 5 children (Flora, Janet, John, Euphemia & Charles) that survived into adulthood. Flora is listed as the Head of the House in the 1881 Scottish Census. The children's Dunedin Cemetery Records indicate they travelled to New Zealand about 1894.

Flora’s oldest son, John Robertson MACNEE (1867-1944) worked as a labourer in Pukerau and a shepherd at Tarras, before marrying Jane CRAWFORD of Waikoikoi in 1898. He started married life working as a shepherd at Five Rivers, Mataura, then Millars Flat before returning to the Pukerau area in 1906, buying land and farming in Waikoikoi until 1940 when they retired to Gore. John and Jane had 8 children, some of whom attended Waikoikoi School, and played Cricket and Rugby for the Koi. John was a Trustee and Secretary for the Koi Cemetery – where he and Jane are buried.

Flora’s youngest son, James Charles (1876-1854), worked as a carpenter in Pukerau and Wellington, marrying Helen KINLOCK of Milton in 1907, before moving to Dunedin. They had six children.

Flora’s oldest daughter - Flora Jane (1859-DOD unknown) - was born in Michigan, Indiana, America where she, and her parents, are recorded in the 1860 Michigan Census. 1871, and 1881 she was in Scotland with her parents and siblings. We can find no records for her in NZ, so she may not have come to New Zealand.

Flora’s second daughter - Janet Jessie Nicol (1866-1958) – worked as a dressmaker in Dunedin from 1902, where she died 1958.

Flora’s youngest daughter, Euphemia Robertson “Effie” (1874-1952), marred George LAWSON of Inchclutha in 1916. They had twin sons, one of whom died as a child.

  • Pre-purchasing of Pukerau Cemetery plots approved

      3 November 2021
    Main image

    "Plots decision welcomed

Those with ties to Pukerau can soon choose to be buried with family and loved ones. Gore District councillors accepted a recommendation to allow the pre› purchasing of Pukerau Cemetery plots at a full council meeting last month.

The Pukerau Cemetery Support Group Trust is pleased with the decision. Group secretary Margaret Pullar said it was something they had been pushing for. ‘‘Our loved ones were buried here,’’ she said. ‘‘The third generation of descendants of Pukerau and Kaiwera’s pioneers are now well into their 80s and 90s. Not only do they want to secure their own grave plots, but their children wish to be buried in plots beside them or close by,’’ Mrs. Pullar said. ‘‘The people who have been brought up here as children have a very strong tie to Pukerau. ‘‘You meet people here who come from all over the place. People who have had their childhood here want to come back and be buried here. ‘‘This is their home. This is their turangawaewae,’’ she said.

The cemetery support group spent the last five years working to improve Pukerau Cemetery. This included new developments such as a sign on State Highway 1, metalling the road to the cemetery, and a new shelter. ‘‘A number of local residents have donated generously to these developments since 2016. Also, local organisations and businesses, because they have firm connections with Pukerau and Kaiwera,’’ Mrs. Pullar said. Information boards were also planned, detailing the history of Pukerau and the people buried at the cemetery, she said.

In a report tabled at the council meeting, parks and recreation manager Keith McRobie said Pukerau Cemetery was a special case. ‘‘Pukerau Cemetery is a small community›based cemetery with strong links to the area’s history and families. Many of the current families have links back four to five generations.’’

Councils typically discourage pre-selling burial plots because of logistical issues. However, at Pukerau Cemetery ‘‘this is not considered to be a huge risk,’’ Mr. McRobie said.

‘‘Based on historic information and requests over the last three years, the council could expect to have three to four pre›purchased plots over and above those currently held.’’

  • Southern Monuments complete restoration of Harvey family plot

      16 October 2021
    Main image

James Renwick HARVEY (1861-1927) and his wife Matilda nee GILMOUR (1869-1902), moved to Pukerau about 1896 where James took up work as a shepherd.

Their only child, Elizabeth Martin (1896-1898), was born and died at Crichton Park, and is buried at Pukerau Cemetery.

James and Matilda subsequently moved to South Canterbury where Matilda died of tuberculosis in 1902. Matilda was buried with her daughter in Pukerau.

1903 James remarried (Emma Elizabeth STOWELL 1875-1964). They did not have children. James is buried with his second wife in Timaru.

As there were no descendants, funds raised from Give-A-Little and other sources have been used to cover the $414 costs involved in the restoration.

The Gore District Council will level the ground and plant it in out in grass.

Grateful thanks to Phillip Pullar who oversaw the laying of the drains as specified by the Gore District Council, ensuring they were connected to the existing drains, cleared away the heaps of undergrowth cuttings, and used his farm equipment to prepare the east end of the Cemetery for sewing out in grass. To Robert Scott who generously supplied the digger and assisted with the work. Ian Pullar and Lyn Sharp who also assisted. A combined total of nine hours hard work donated plus machinery.

  • Unmarked grave of Jane McDonald & Catherine Petrie

      19 October 2020
    Main image

With grateful thanks to Veronica Reed nee O'Hagan, we have recently verified that Jane McDonald and Catherine Petrie, who are buried in an unmarked grave at Pukerau Cemetery, were sisters of James McDonald who lived with his wife and children at Pukerau.

With the help of a family tree Veronica and her father created many years ago, we learnt Catherine went by the surname Peattie, yet Catherine’s Death Certificate was in the name Peathe. To add to the challenge Jane, Catherine and James' baptism records in Ireland were under the name McDonell.

With the printouts of their Irish Baptism records, NZ Death Registrations, and articles in Papers Past, we now have the necessary evidence and information required to mark the grave.

Together with the family have prepared a stone for the unmarked grave as below which will be laid when the weather allows.

On Monday morning Ian Pullar, Mervyn Potter, Robert Young, and Richard Puanaki spent several hours preparing for the concrete and then carting it in wheelbarrows and smoothing it out for the Cemetery shelter's base as well as bases for two of the seats. We were so fortunate with the weather, not cold, not raining and not windy.

How proud Jim Pullar, Roland Potter, Jim Young and Gordon Pullar - who all contributed so much to the Cemetery over the years - would be of their sons / grandaughter's partner.
