Raising funds to enable planned developments at Pukerau Cemetery
Southland
Since 1881 Pukerau Cemetery has been a sacred place and a monument to our ancestors & the district's pioneers. The Pukerau Cemetery Support Group, formed in 2016 by descendants of families interred there, aims to ensure family input into the cemetery's long-term development.
Our plans for Pukerau cemetery include:
+ Building a sanctuary shelter, with Norton's bricks featuring in the design, that includes: information boards with burial map, names, plot details, and district history; seating; & a tank to collect rainwater;
+ Developing a service board with names of the men and women from Arthurton, Benio, Kaiwera, Otikerama, Otaraia & Pukerau who have served at war.
+ Installing seating
+ Replacing the named wooden crosses, installed in the 1980s, with permanent granite plaques
+ Beautifying the grounds with trees & shrubs at the entrance, around the shelter, & at the Catholic block
Gore District Council manages the cemetery and recently: added signage; improved access to the Catholic block; undertook arborist work; and offered $21,000 towards the cost of the information boards of our proposed sanctuary shelter.
$43,265 has been donated by way of cash donations (Kaiwera Community Trust, Mataura Licensing Trust, Pakeke Lions Gore, Gore RSA, Pukerau Mini Rifle Club, NZ Lotteries Grants Board, and numerous individuals); and there have been pledges of donations of materials and labour (Graham Engineering, Hammond and Ryder Funeral Services Ltd, Marshall Industries Ltd, Norton Brick & Tile Company Ltd, Trevor Woodrow (bricklayer) and committee members).
We need further funds to complete these projects & ask you to consider Giving a Little contribution to assist us to complete these projects.
Since 1880 Pukerau Cemetery has been a sacred place and a monument to the district's pioneers and ancestors. The Pukerau Cemetery Support Group, formed early in 2016 by members of the community and descendants of ancestors interred there, aims to ensure continuing community input into Pukerau Cemetery's long-term development.
Funds raised will be used to:
1. Build a santuary shelter
2. Develop a board with names of local servicemen
3. Create outdoor seating
4. Replace the named wooden crosses
5. Beautify the grounds
Any excess funds will be used to restore derelict graves
Daffodils and Cherry trees planted 17 April 2024
Last week members of the Pukerau Community; Pukerau School students, teachers, parents and grandparents; Gore District Council staff; came together to assist the Pukerau Cemetery Support Group committee members in planting some 1000 daffodils at the entrances to the Cemetery.
The bulbs were planted under a row of cherry trees also recently planted at the entrance.
Many of the bulbs had been donated, including heritage bulbs from the Speden pioneers’ garden.
