Purchase of museum building at 8 Hardy Street

$4,580 of $175,000 goal
Given by 28 generous donors in around 9 months

We are close to being able to purchase and improve the building at 8 Hardy Street so that the museum can continue to serve the community.

Canterbury

The building is currently rented with a lease with right of renewal until May 2025.

Over many years the Christchurch City Council have made annual grants to help pay the rent. However, the past 4 years this amount has dropped by 40%. We expect this to be less again in the future as there are many local organisations competing for funding.

Long term the Museum Committee and volunteers have concerns about having a secure location suitable to carry on with the important research and resources provided.

We have also spent/invested $12,000 on an engineer’s report and earthquake strengthening design. Currently the building is remarkably at 50% of the building code and with a simple build of 2 small wing walls the building will increase to 67% of building code.

We would like to make some improvements to the building at the same time as strengthening including, re-roof, south end wall repairs and new windows, painting the exterior, minor crack repairs to foundation, a few piles jacked and packed, insulating the ceiling, some wiring renewal to name most. This part of the project will come after the purchase is complete.

We estimate the total cost including purchase, repairs and maintenance to be $250,000.

To date we have managed to raise $60,000 of which we have spent $10,000 for engineer’s report and design.

This leaves a total of $190,000 to raise to complete the whole project.

Stage one is to purchase the building - $130,000 required.

Stage two, strengthening, repairs, maintenance - $45,000 is required.

Update from February 03rd:

We are getting so close to purchase! The purchase price is $175,000. Through the Givealittle website and direct donations we have a little over $80,000 raised. With purchasing (costs) we now require just $100,000 to purchase. The sales and purchase agreement in place gives us until June to raise this money. All donations, big or small add up.

Feel free to drop in to 8 Hardy Street and see for yourself the great work our volunteers are doing and view the building.

Thank you to all that have donated so far, small and big.

In 2013, I worked with artists and community members in New Brighton to create a publication called Alternating Currents #2. Quentin, a volunteer at the museum, opened the doors for us to dig through the archives to engage in conversations of post-quake Christchurch circa then. The hardcopy should be in your collection, and I've just emailed you the PDF :) All the best for your fundraiser!
