Help stop private use helicopters from destroying quiet neighbourhoods and disturbing precious havens for endangered birds
Auckland
Quiet Sky Waitematā is seeking a plan change to ban private helipads in residential areas in Auckland.
Three independent commissioners recently decided that private use helicopters are a permitted activity in residential zones. Much like a bike or a car.
This could mean anyone can land a helicopter in a residential neighbourhood, without a resource consent, as long as they claim they meet the noise standards. It would be up to you to prove the helicopter doesn’t meet noise standards.
This affects ALL coastal suburbs - Pt Chevalier, Westmere, Coxs Bay, Herne Bay, St Marys Bay, Parnell, Birkenhead, Northcote, Takapuna, Howick, Te Atatū Peninsula, Hobsonville Point, Orewa, Red Beach etc.
Auckland has become the only modern city in the world permitting helicopters as of right in a residential area. Sydney, New York and Los Angeles have banned private use helicopters.
Mike Lee, Councillor for Auckland, is putting forward a Notice of Motion to ban private use helicopters in residential areas at the next Auckland Council Planning Committee meeting on the 21st of July.
We are holding a public meeting on the 10th of July at Hawke Sea Scout Hall in Coxs Bay to discuss how you can help fight this absurd decision and make sure this Notice of Motion succeeds.
Quiet Sky Waitematā supports the use of rescue and police helicopters for public benefit.
All donations, no matter how small, will go a long way in helping us protect our quiet skies and the rich biodiversity of the Waitematā.
Quiet Sky Waitematā believes private helipads should not be permitted in the residential suburbs of Auckland City. Our purpose is to educate the public and stop helicopter applications that will disturb quiet neighbourhoods and harm wildlife. Helicopter landing rights are granted in perpetuity. Once approved they can't be revoked. They simply must not be granted in the first place.
