Help stop private use helicopters from destroying quiet neighbourhoods and disturbing precious havens for endangered birds
Auckland
This page has now closed - please head to our new fundraising page https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/quiet-sky-waitemata to make a donation. Thank you.
Quiet Sky Waitematā is opposing a private helicopter in Auckland. 4 helicopter movements a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year between 7am and 10pm! That’s what the owners of a Westmere home have applied for on the headland of Coxs Bay.
The proposed flight path crosses roosting birds on the headland and the valuable foraging habitat of Coxs Bay where endangered Oystercatchers, Caspian terns, Banded dotterel, NZ dotterel and Eastern bar tailed godwits feed on the tidal edge. The mudflats from Meola Reef to the Herne Bay coastline host thousands of indigenous birds.
Quiet Sky Waitematā has been recording the endangered birds that forage directly below the proposed helipad. We need your help to fund our case at a hearing where duty commissioners will decide whether to grant approval for this application.
All donations, no matter how small, will go a long way in helping us protect our quiet skies and the rich biodiversity of the Waitematā.
Helicopter landing rights are granted in perpetuity. Once approved they can’t be revoked. They destroy peaceful skies and biodiverse habitats with no way back. They simply must not be granted in the first place.
Quiet Sky Waitematā believes private helipads should not be permitted in the residential suburbs of Auckland City. Our purpose is to educate the public and stop helicopter applications that will disturb quiet neighbourhoods and harm wildlife. Helicopter landing rights are granted in perpetuity. Once approved they can't be revoked. They simply must not be granted in the first place.

Quiet Sky Waitematā New Fundraising Page 2 May 2025
Hi everyone
A HUGE thank you to everyone who has donated. We're so grateful for your support and we can't tell you how much we appreciate everyone getting behind Quiet Sky Waitematā.
If you're a first time visitor to our fundraising page this one has now closed. To make a donation to our new fundraising page please visit https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/quiet-sky-waitemata
If you get a chance to visit Coxs Bay in May and June it is when the Dotterels turn up in greater numbers so keep an eye out of them foraging on the mudflats during low tide. And of course please keep a safe distance and put your dog on the lead if you're near their nesting sites. Also a big thank you to Steve Meadows for this outstanding shot of a Kotare feeding in Coxs Bay.
Thanks again for your support!
The Quiet Sky Waitematā team
