Help us Quin ancestors to restore our ancestral plot in Riverton.
Riverton, Southland
If you’ve been to Riverton lately and visited the cemetery there, you might have spotted the Quin gravesite – but it’s in pretty rough condition.
The site, which is in a lovely location, is dominated by a self-sown tree, the metal surrounds are damaged, and the main headstone is almost tipping over. In this gravesite there are three James Quins buried. One being James, the brother of Charles Quin (our ancestor). James and his wife Ellen had no children. The other two are Charles’ sons, both named James, who died aged 5 months in 1866 and aged 4 years in 1870.
We can either let it go and do nothing; or do something now to memorialize our history. We have decided to do the latter. The project cost is expected to be around $6000 to remove the tree (unfortunately it is our responsibility as it is within the gravesite), remove the concrete block, railings and footing, and stabilize the headstone.
So it’s time to get the cobwebs out of your pockets. If you are a descendant of Charles Quin then please help out. Whether you’re descended from the Annie (McKenna), John Thomas, Joseph, Henry, William Alphonsus, Francis, Alfred or Fred branch of the wider family, your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Pat Quin (Te Awamutu) Francis (Frank) Quin branch
Peter Quin (Waikanae) John Thomas branch
Brian Moriarty (Christchurch) John Thomas branch
PS Any surplus funds will go to another Quin project or left in trust for future .
I am a descendant of Charles Quin, whose sons and brother are buried in this plot.
Upgrading the plot; removing the tree and surrounds.
Update well overdue 15 April 2025
We struck significant delays with our builder in Riverton and he, prodded by Shane's help and strong encouragement (!!##??), has only just completed the concrete nib foundations earlier this month. The engineers have done a wonderful job of welding and reassembling the metal surrounds for the plot. They were badly damaged, and these have been set into the concrete on three sides.
The boxing will be stripped and the concrete nib plastered, then pebbles will be spread in the plot area.
It's looking pretty magnificent already. A big thanks to Shane who has really put the hard yards into this one.
I'll post a photo when all is finished.
