Vital Lung Cancer Treatment costs for Rachel 'Poppet' Ellis (Porirua RSA)

Porirua, Wellington

Kia ora friends, family, and supporters,

Rachel 'Poppet' Ellis has been diagnosed with lung cancer, but sadly her treatment is not covered by Pharmac. To give Rachel the chance to fight this cancer, she needs 200mg of potentially life-saving Pembrolizumab to be administered every three weeks (for a total of 10 sessions), priced at $10,923 NZD for the first nine treatments and $2,656 NZD for the final treatment ($100,963 in total). These costs include the Pembrolizumab, the oncology treatment fee, and the 'on treatment review fee' for each session.

Rachel is the wife of Daniel Ellis, a New Zealand veteran who enlisted in the Army in 1989 and retired in 2001, having held the rank of Sergeant for approximately six years. Rachel and Daniel are extremely active members of the Porirua RSA, dedicating their time and energy to the veteran-focused organisation. Rachel is a member of the Porirua RSA's Executive Committee, always going above and beyond to support her RSA community.

If you're able to support Rachel with any donations, big or small, please do so through this Givealittle page. Our goal is to cover as much of Rachel's cancer treatment costs as possible to take the stress away from her and her family.

Ngā mihi nui (many thanks),

John Hannan, Welfare Support Advisor (The Porirua RSA)

Use of funds

Pembrolizumab is approved by Medsafe, but not funded by Pharmac for non-small cell lung cancer. Rachel requires ten treatments for the chance to fight this cancer, with the full cost totaling at $100,963.

Thank you all.   13 February 2023

Update: Well, I am sitting in limbo at the moment. Waiting until the 20th of this month to see what road we will be travelling down next as far as treatment goes. As I have explained, my platelets caused a huge speed bump as far as my treatment went so far as to say, it stopped everything in its tracks. So, now platelets are up, but how far, and if they are up enough, we are yet to find out. My breathing has become harder, and is having an affect on my day to day lufe, but I will battle through. I have realised that without treatment, I do not know what path will be travelled and that is spooky..But onward and upward, not everything in life has rules you must play by. Sometimes you must make your own. So, lovely donors. We will see next week what will be happening...Immunotherapy?..or Chemo?.. or Natropathy.?..Chemo is definitely not on my list. Hence the rules of this pathway. Thank you one and all so very much, for your love and good wishes and prayers. Godbless from my Whanau and myself.
