Rainbow Crossing for Nelson to show that we stand in unity and don't tolerate hate speech

Nelson / Tasman

This week I have been horrified at hateful and bigoted comments made online, made in relation to Nelson Council's proposal to paint a Rainbow crossing in Nelson in support of our Rainbow Community.

My heart goes out to anyone who saw those comments and was affected by it. I would love our community to come together to donate to this fund as together we can unite to let every person from our Rainbow Community know that we stand with them and support them. I want them to know that every time they walk over this crossing we as a community also contributed and showed our love for them.

Here is a comment left online which sums up why the Rainbow Crossing is so important...

'' When I was a young gay youth growing up in Nelson I'd have killed for a symbol like this to tell me and all the others like me that it is OK to be gay!

This is not just colours on the pavement, this is a flag to the entire community saying you're equal and you are accepted. You have no idea how much good this small gesture can really do. ''

A private message sent to me by a parent '' Our teenager has been to hell and back with bullying and hate speech because they are perceived as being different. ''

All donations will go straight to the fund to cover long wearing, non slip paint as well as artists fees. New Plymouth has a similar crossing which cost $7000 so I have set our goal as this but all donations are incredible and greatly appreciated.
