Let's build a wharf for safe access to NZ's 2nd largest habour - The Manukau

$240 of $250,000 goal
Given by 5 generous donors in around 12 months

A volunteer initiative dedicated to Connecting Manukau Harbour Communities with the only safe all-tide 24/7 access wharf.

Auckland

In December 2019 in Business Association invited feedback from our local community regarding the need for an all-tide wharf. There was overwhelming support for the idea.

After solid work and extensive consultation with local iwi, Resource Consent to proceed was granted in March 2023.

We’ve been gifted many of the necessary materials and local people are standing by to help with the

construction, but now it’s time to invest money as well as time!

The next stage is to raise finance to engage a marine engineer, purchase the rest of the materials, and then begin the construction.

Reasons we need a wharf:

1. Safety. Desperate need for a wharf for Coast Guard access.

2. Alternative transport. Small jetties and boat ramps are suitable only for small recreational and fishing vessels. A wharf is a first step towards helping to reduce traffic on the overloaded motorway system. We believe that once safe infrastructure is available, a commercial operator will see the opportunity.

3. Sport. Opportunity for water-based sport such as waka ama, school trips and convention activities to be established.

5. Tourism. Opportunities for tourism on the Manukau Harbour, including a number of iwi-led initiatives. We have a gem they have on our doorstep, with history, orcas and highly significant bird life.

7. Connecting Isolated Communities. Reliable and regular water transport will connect other harbourside settlements and reduce the isolation of the Awhitu Peninsula.

Please support our project. Kia ora!

Use of funds

All funds raised, whether we meet our goal or not, will go toward construction of the public wharf, including but not limited to the cost of the Resource Consent and other council inspection fees. Financials will be available on the Societies website.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
