I was born with an intellectual disability but I have never let that get in the way, I am going to World Games if I can raise the money
Canterbury
I am 48 years old and love Track and Field.
I was born with an intellectual disability but I have never let that get in the way of achieving my dreams.
I have been a member of Special Olympics for over 20 years both and Otago first then Canterbury.
I love running and competing and have been chosen as a member of the New Zealand team to compete at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles in July this Year. I have trouble reading and writing and fundraising has been difficult with these issues.
However I have decided to Ride Le Race in March with my team of 3 other riders, Mike Louden of Ideal Electrical, Murray Bennett a seasoned Le Race veteran and Special Olympics Supporter and Logan Evans a Shirley Boys Track and Field Athlete. I have been training hard on my bike which has not been easy as it is not a rode bike but I am determined.
I have to pay entry fee of $400 for us, but hope to get pledges to cover this and a little more towards my trip. I am not able to go out and find sponsors as I am doing a paper and painting course to try and find employment on my return from the USA.
Can you help me please?
I have assisted Ray with some fundraising ideas as it is hard for him to do this himself due to his basic money skills and his majority of friends have disabilities too so we do not have a strong team to support him fundraising wise.
The other two coaches and myself all have full time jobs and the pressure to raise the funds has taken it's toll on us.
Christchurch is a lot more difficult to raise funds since the quakes as there are so many worthy causes BUT Ray has worked extremely hard and deserves a hand up now to realise his goal to compete. This will be his last chance due to his age and the event he is competing in but we feel he has a great chance of bringing home medals
