Help Jenny and Daniel rebuild Asahi Sushi after a fire and bring their beloved Whangārei sushi shop back to life.
Whangarei, Northland
Many of you will know Jenny and Daniel, the kind, hardworking couple behind Asahi Sushi, the little sushi shop that has been at the heart of Whangārei town for many years. They’ve always welcomed everyone with warm smiles, kind words, and fresh, delicious food made with love.
Last week, an unexpected fire broke out, and in an instant, everything they had worked so hard for was gone. Their shop and their livelihood were left damaged and unable to open. They’re still in shock, trying to process everything while figuring out what to do next.
To make things even harder, they recently discovered that their shop had not been insured, something accidentally overlooked in the busyness of life. They only found out after the fire that they did not have coverage. Now they’re facing significant repair costs and a challenging road ahead before they can reopen.
They’ve been incredibly moved by all the messages, hugs, and aroha from customers and friends. Jenny says it’s that kindness that’s keeping them going right now.
If you’ve ever been greeted by Jenny’s smile, enjoyed one of their sushi rolls, or simply felt the warmth of their kindness, please consider helping them through this heartbreaking time. Every bit of support, no matter how small, will bring them one step closer to reopening their doors and rebuilding what they’ve lost.
Thank you so much for your love, kindness, and generosity.
My family and I met Jenny and Daniel's family through our church, and they've become dear friends of ours over time. From the very beginning, we were drawn to their kindness, humility and genuineness.
The goal of this donation page is to help Jenny and Daniel recover and rebuild Asahi Sushi after the fire, covering the cost of repairs, cleaning and essential replacements needed to reopen the shop.
Update on Asahi Sushi 3 December 2025
Thank you all for your continued support, and we sincerely apologise for the very delayed update. We know it’s been a long time without confirmation, and we didn’t want to provide any information until everything was certain. After careful discussion, it has been decided that Asahi Sushi will be reopening, not at the original location, but in town, very close to where it used to be. There is still a significant amount of work to complete before opening at the new location, and we appreciate your patience as we move forward.
