Remembering Nick Ryan

Nicholas Jeremy Ryan (Nick) was described as a gourmand, bon vivant, kind, generous beyond his means, lovable rascal, entrepreneur & always passionate about the next big adventure. He was a well-known Wellingtonian with a huge group of friends from all walks of life.

He wasn't perfect & never claimed to be. Real people aren't. Nick had his troubles & finally succumbed to them in August 2021. We would like to have a place to remember Nick & have chosen a bench with 2 brass plaques by the children's playground, Oriental Bay; one for Nick & the other for his bestest bud & companion, Bernie, Nick's Bernese mountain dog who was also the namesake of Nick's cafe, Bernies on the Bay, at Freyberg Pool, Wellington.

So many of you have sent your sympathies & memories to the family & asked if there is something you can do to remember Nick & here it is for everyone to contribute to. The cost of the plaques is circa $8,000 but we hope to raise more as a significant donation to the Depression Recovery Trust who plan to build a Centre in Wellington to radically enhance the treatment & support for people with depression & anxiety. We believe both are great memorials to Nick; one to bring calm & relaxation to people as they sit by the park next to Nick's cafe & the donation to the Trust to try & prevent others feel the loss & sadness of loved ones taken by depression.
