Rescuing our native kauri forests from dangerous pollution in a practical hands-on battle, like "eating an elephant one bite at a time."

Russell, Northland

There is a trash problem in the native forests behind the Waikare inlet in the Bay of Islands. Illegal dumping is compromising the water quality below the dumpsites. One of the worst spots is on the forest road section of the Russell Whakapara road, where rubbish from old cars, broken glass, used nappies, and everything between, has been building up for decades just above a beautiful natural spring of fresh water. These pure waters are being badly contaminated. The site is dangerous and difficult and clean-up and has traditionally been put in the "Too Hard" basket by everyone. Enter one Aroha Cope, who rigs up a system to get down the precipitous bank and back up with the rubbish. She is single-handedly transporting the rubbish up to the road, sorting it and getting it to the local re-cycling centre. She is currently incurring costs she cannot afford for rubbish bags, petrol and transport costs, let alone the time she is putting in to get the job done.

Use of funds

Rubbish bags, petrol and transport costs, and if enough money comes in, compensation to Aroha Cope for the time, and expertise she has so far donated for free.

We got there!  17 February 2026

The much-needed money to support Aroha in her work flowed in, in just a few days, proving what a wonderful environmentally-minded community we have here in Kororareka. We reached the goal and slightly surpassed it. Thank-you to all those generous locals who donated but I believe some donors were from further afield as well and we thank them perhaps even more heartily, since they were prepared to help the environment even when it is not on their own doorstep.

The forest and its waters will be healing because of you, and your support for our local "she-roine"

Also thanks to councillors who are stepping up to do what they can.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
