Reuniting a family: Help us make a dream come true

My name is Jozsef, and I'm reaching out to you with a story of love, loss, and hope.

Auckland

I was born in Hungary and raised by an adoptive family who always told me I wasn't their real son. Life was tough, and for many years, I wondered about my birth parents and whether they were still alive.

Finally, after 48 years of searching, I found my birth mother, a lovely lady with a beautiful smile. We started talking, and I learned about her heartbreaking story. She gave birth to me in a country ruled by Communists, and her own mother told her to get an abortion. But she was determined to have me, even though her family couldn't provide a safe environment for us.

Sadly, my mother had to place me in an orphanage when I was just a few months old. I spent three years there until I was adopted by a family who signed the papers without my mother's consent. My mother tried to find me when I was four, but it was too late. She never forgot about me and spent the next 48 years looking for me, crying over my birth certificate on my birthday.

Finally, we found each other, but our reunion was cut short when my mother had a heart attack, and I never saw her in person. I want to go back to Hungary to see my mother in person, but I can't afford the trip. I recently had surgery for a rotator cuff injury and can't work to support my family.

I've never asked for help before, but I'm a bit trapped in this situation. It would mean the world if you could give me a little to help me reunite with my birth mother. And it's not just about me; it's about my daughter too.

Great News  14 May 2023

Dear donors

We made it back to my country. We are very grateful for all donations. Without people help we wouldn't able to make it back. We had great reunion with a lots of family members. Of course me and my daughter manage to meet with my birth mother first time in our life. Not sure how can I describe the feelings. We did meet with other family members who I haven't seen since 1990. They are lovely people from my mother side who bring me up, and there was more special moment on the trip what I never imagine will happen in my lifetime .

Many thanks again for all of you who helped me and my family to reunite.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
