“Ribbon Prayer Wall for Peace" - located at the Matakana War Memorial - For Peace and celebrate our Centenary 1920-2020
Auckland
This ANZAC day the Matakana War Memorial will celebrate it's 100th Birthday (Centenary 1920 - 2020) and we want to build a “Ribbon Prayer Wall for Peace.”. A temporary public art work to be created mostly by the pupils of the Matakana School.
The owners of a lovely new wooden slat fence located behind the War Memorial have given us permission to attach hundreds of coloured Ribbons inscribed with names, wishes and prayers for peace. This wall will represent how we can come together as a community with respect and kindness to create a more peaceful world.
Each pupil of the Matakana School will receive 1 metre of coloured ribbon on which they can choose to write or draw any of the following: their name; the name of a relative who served; a wish for peace; or a prayer. They can also draw symbols, flowers or whatever they feel conveys a message of Peace.
We need funds for 300 yards of silk ribbon, 150 coloured markers, fittings and fixtures to attach the ribbons, 20 giant poppies and posters of all the local men listed on our War Memorial. The big Red Poppies and Posters of the Men will also be attached to the “Ribbon Prayer Wall for Peace.”
The wall will be installed on April 23rd and in place for 7 days.
