Roxy + Emily Go Dry

  • Captains Log - day 17

      17 November 2014

Hi again! Its now day 17. 17 days without a glass of my beloved, freshly chilled Sav. Its been alright though, I've ran the gauntlet of afternoon beers with mates in the sun ( ""Just a lemonade for me, thanks"") Pizza dates with friends ( faux bubbly grape juice is actually pretty damn refreshing with a Hell Pizza) and social events ( Burlesque Masquearde Ball, I'm looking at you - so much Red Bull was consumed by me that night) Some unexpected side effects of not indulging include a spot of weight loss ( can't complain there) and a few more dollars in my bank account at the end of the week ( turns out, booze expenditure can really add up) Emily and I completed our first challenge video ( see link below) and it was pretty flipping awesome, I'm really hoping we get some more quirky challenges to fulfill as it was fun to just dork around in front of the camera for a bit. so, if you're reading this, you should totally get behind us, flick us a cool $50 and come up with a crazy challenge ( you know, you can team up with mates and pool funds too to make up the $50, no qualms with that! ) Funds wise - we are almost halfway there! So exciting! Im really really wanting to reach our fundraising targets, and do the very best possible for NZ Womens Refuge and Wellington Rape Crisis, and the best way to do this is to just get the link and the campaign out there - even if you can't spare a few dollars to donate, sharing the event, telling your friends and passing the word around would be a fantastic way to help us reach our goals as well. In the lead up to Xmas, incidences of domestic violence ( and therefore the demand for financial and physical assistance from Womens Refuge and Rape Crisis) increases exponentially - a sad side effect of the extra stress and strain the holiday season can place on families. The money we raise will go to help these foundations at a crucial time of year, right when their services are under the most pressure, and will really help women and children in need in our local community. Get amongst it. On that note - I would like to take this opportunity to thank of our donor - H Carmody. Thank you so much for your generous donation, you rule! Talk soon! R x

  • A Christmas Song in the Philippines

      8 November 2014

Some of the words are translated: "Hope will once shine again; Within everyone, Thank you for your light Christmas will be colorful once again." Thank you kind people! :) You will make Christmas bright for many.

  • Welcome to NO!-vember, Day 4

      4 November 2014

Hi! Nice to see you here! Our challenge has been running for 4 days now, so I thought it was time for a little progress update and a bit of a chat. First things first. For those of you that don't know us, heres a bit of background info. Emily and I have been friends for years now. She's the good sort of friend who is always around when you need her, and nothing that you ask of her as a friend is too ridiculous. She is the kind of friend that when I have a bad day, she will pop around after work with wine, more chocolate than you could ever possibly need and a listening ear that she lets me fill with my endless ranting, complaining and general whinging. Like I said, she's a good friend. It was on one of these wine and chocolate nights that I mentioned to her that I had an idea I wanted to do. I told her I wanted to go sober for a month to raise funds for charity, and it was looking like November was going to be THE month. I expected her to laugh and say something along the lines of ""good luck, ill believe it when I see it"" but instead she rose to the challenge to become my partner in sober crime ( so to speak) I guess I should quantify why its seemingly such ridiculous notion for me to not drink for a month. I love wine. Like, a lot. When I'm out socially, its not often you will spot me without a glass in my hand. By not often I mean, it never happens. Ever. I also am partial to a wine or 3 while visiting friends, or unwinding at the end of the day, or because its sunny or........ you can see where I'm going with this. So not drinking for a month is a little odd for me. I think the only other times in my life I haven't drunk anything for a month would be when I was a child, or during my pregnancies. So, yeah, drinking is pretty much a thing that I do. Thats why I'm so stoked that Emily has come on board and decided to do this challenge with me - misery love company after all. I wanted to support charities that make an active difference in peoples lives, and ones that don't often see the spotlight much. Womens Refuge and Rape Crisis Wellington are 2 such charities. They both do such important and valuable work, but they also receive next to no funding. Womenfs Refuge receives an average of 82,000 calls to itsCrisis/Support lines every year. This means they answer a crisis or information call every nine minutes of every day. In total, 20,000 women and children needed the help of Womenfs Refuge in 2013. In 2012-13, their refuges provided 76,000 safe beds for women and children who did not feel safe to sleep in their own homes ? this was an average of 209 women and children each night. This is just the very tip of the iceberg in terms of the workload and financial strain that Womens Refuge operates under. Its such a valuable and important service, and it is sadly so greatly need in NZ. Wellington Rape Crisis is the other charity we have chosen to support Wellington Rape Crisis provides free counselling, support and information for survivors of rape and sexual abuse, their families, friends and whanau. They are also the lead agency in the Sexual Abuse Prevention Network, providing sexual violence primary prevention programmes to young people, hospitality staff and other community members in the our region. The work that this organisation does for the community is invaluable and the support and understanding they can give to others in their time of need is beyond measure. Both of these organisations have a very special place in my heart, and I'm happy to be able to try and help them in my own very small way. So, with all that being said, please pop through a few dollars and help out, every donation counts and will make a positive difference in others lives. I have to say thank you SO MUCH to the generous folk who have already donated - Anon guest giver, Sally W, Catrina H, A.M Coervers, Ross kelly, Kelly Manu, Rachel Rouge and Carlos. You are all absolute stars, thank you so much for your support so early in the piece. Emily and I truly do appreciate it, endlessly. Emily and I will be filming our first challenge video over the next few days so keep checking bag for more blog updates, videos and pictures! 4 down - 26 to go! Talk soon xx
