With all the build up, training and planning we competed the row in 4hrs 14min with 4 much needed breaks to have a quick munch.
An amazing journey with some really cool people In such a cool place. Thanks to Shane,Jaime and Kahn for being mad enough to even want to take it on, good work!
Thanks to Tracy and Alistair, the safety crew that kept us pointing where we needed to go,that kept us safe refuelling our tummies 👍 and to Adam and Margo for taking all the trailers back to the club. It would have been an even bigger day without you guys! Good an ya👍
Thankyou to Mt Iron engineering for the amazing sponsorship!! It fueled all the vehicles that made the day possible.
Finally, to all the very generous donors that have chipped into the the event and helped raise money for the charity's.
It was such a cool trip with quite choppy waters for the first half of the route, some fought back pain and some fought nasty little blisters but made it in high spirits as a team.
Also, to the impressive welcome party on the beach that cheered us in.. Legends! Thankyou!
No way has this day actually nearly arrived.......
The training, the blisters, the prep...
No going back now..
The water and wind has settled so well after last nights condition, early frost and clear skys ahead. SO EXCITED!!
The boat (Marcel) is checked, set up and loaded onto the trailer. The safety boat and crew is all good to go.
All we need to do now is row (28.6 miles) nearly 3miles further then the London marathon..... once we launch the boats we will need to row up to the end ( the true start) of the lake and then to Roy's bay.
We aim to be landing on the shore at the watersports facility at about 2pm, so come down and cheer us in👍
Cheers
Rob
The news came in this evening about the change in crew members.
Unfortunately Mike has made a decision to pull out due to suffering from a painful back, it's not an easy call to make this close to the day but totally understandable and a good call to not aggravate it for 4 hrs doing the same thing over and over! Sad to see you go Mike! Get better soon mate.
Welcome to the crew Kahn Cawte and thank you for stepping in for Mike in such short notice! Good on ya mate!
If the weather is good Thursday evening we will hit the water for the final training session then off to the pub for a pint and go through the plan..
Cheers
Rob
Hi all.
We are planning to give it a go once and for all this coming Saturday 22nd May. C'mon weather be good to us so we can finally conquer this mission!!
It's been a long year with SO many cancellations... Some of us have kept up the training by taking advantage of the calm (but bitterly cold) mornings while others (myself included...) have just been to busy for on the water sessions.
Just got to get on the water and focus on keeping dry and rowing nice and smooth as a crew for 45km.
It's all for great causes!
Please help by spreading the word and hopefully raise more funds for our community charities.
More info on times and to confirm it's a go on Friday evening.
Thanks!
Good luck team!
After numerous set backs and bad weather pushing us back we now have a few weekends to aim at.
Now that the weather is settling down we are looking at May to row the length of the lake. Fingers crossed for some really nice weather so we can finally accomplish this mission lol
Thank you all for all the support so far and please keep spreading the word.
I will post more updates closer the time.
Cheers
Rob
Hi everyone,
Good news, Shane is back in action and back in the boats. Time to restart the training and shed the Christmas layer....
With recent crazy winds and unpredictable weather conditions there hasnt been many chances to hit the water.
Its now looking like Autumn for our next chance to row the lake, settled weather and amazing colours throughout the countryside.
I have also pushed the closing date back to the end of April, see how we go with this one..
Cheers
Rob
Hi all,
A bit of bad news. Last week our man Shane badly damaged his left ankle ( just as his right one got better) and is now in recovery mode for at least the next 4 weeks.. Get better soon Shane!
Due to the set back I have pushed the end date of our campaign back to the end of Jan to help take some pressure of the recovery. We are still training and spreading the work far and wide.
On another note, a massive thankyou to Jamie and all involved at the rowing club anniversary this past Sunday for raising even more funds and putting in an epic effort on the Ergs (rowing machine) and completing a 45km session, thanks to all that jumped on to share the work! Good on ya's!
Once we have another date set for rowing the lake I will put up another update. In the meantime, please share the fundraiser and spread the word;)
Cheers
Rob
Yaayyy!!! We now have a very generous sponsor to help cover the running costs of the safety boat and transport to and from Makarora.
This is a huge and much appreciated help with the event!
A massive THANKYOU to Mt Iron Engineering for the amazing sponsorship!
Hi all. At noon today we assessed the risks of setting off at 6am in Makarora but with early morning winds picking up it will end up way to rough to row it safely . Therefore we have made the call to postpone it and set sights on the weekend of the 21st/22nd Nov.
It was a hard call to not load up the boat tonight as we looked out across a perfect Wanaka evening!
Better to be safe then sorry!
Ever wanted to know what its like to row? There is no feeling like it, especially when its flat calm, choppy water on the other hand..... maybe not so lol
We have made a little video of us out on the biggest training run yet, out to Glendu bay and back. Hands are sore, body is tender but knowing that with all the amazing donations going out to help lots of people in many different ways its all worth it.
Please help spread the word to help get more donations and make even more of a difference.
If you have any questions please fell free to reach out and send me a message!
Cheers
Rob and the crew
Well, this mornings training sure was a rough one with the past few days grim weather cutting it up. We launched the boat at 8am into the waves and wind but with the conditions working against us we was forced to turn around at Ruby island. However, the crew worked very well together trying to ingore the icy blasts of every other wave trying to get it...
Let's try again tomorrow team!
As the spring weather is kicking up a ruckus I think it's a good time to have a look at the boat and ways to keep the water out!
Any extra weight on/in the boat from rogue waves will make the journey even more difficult so Rob has started crafting up a new device to help combat this potential problem.
The templates for the new wave splitter are first made out of cardboard (a TV box and a cerial box...) and transferred onto a 2mm aluminium sheet ready for cutting, shaping and TIG welding.
More on this to come.
A target has now been set to give us all something to aim for, so let's spread the word and smash the $10,000 mark together!
It was a great morning out on the water today, good conditions up to the point then the winds picked up.
The boat ran well apart from the squeaks n creaks, nothing that a splash of water and a spoon full of cod liver oil can't fix..
We have a few mods to the boat and a bit of setting up to do but other then that spirits are hight and the crew are in good shape, except for Shane with a badly sprained ankle! Good on ya Shane, showed true grit with that today it couldn't have been easy for you! 💪
Looking good guy's x
