In the Christmas holidays I am heading to Bali for three weeks to volunteer in a local school.
The volunteer programme is based in a place called Ubud, where I will teaching English to children between the ages of 5-14. With Bali’s rapidly expanding tourism industry, the demand for local English speakers has never been greater. Children may have the opportunity to learn English at school, but this is taught by a local Balinese teacher and the children never get to practise their conversational skills or hear native English being spoken.
Resources are extremely limited in the local schools so I am hoping to raise money to buy supplies for the children, once I get to Bali. It will be great to spend the money once I am there, so I can invest it back into the Bali economy.
I am looking forward to this experience as it will be a fantastic opportunity to learn about and experience a different culture and work with, and learn from children who are very different to those I teach in New Zealand.
I will be working with a Kiwi organisation called International Volunteer HQ so visit their website to learn more about the projects they are involved in.
Thanks for your support.
