I'm fundraising for one school and a children's home in Gede, Kenya to help provide a better education for promising children in need
Wellington
On my first trip to Africa in 2013, I volunteered at Rainbow House, Children's Home in Gede. It was a challenge I set for myself to push myself out of my comfort zone. I wound up falling in love with the children there and now sponsor Kache, a sixteen year old orphan, to attend a private school and further her education and give her a better chance at attending University and realising her dreams.
In addition I volunteered at the Gede Special School which provides care and education for children with disabilities. The primary ones being hearing impairment and cerebral palsy.
In 2014 I fund raised and went back to Kenya and with the donations was able to provide school supplies, medical supplies, fresh food and fire wood for cooking on.
I am going back in 2016 and fund raising again for these two organisations.
In the lead up to the trip, I will be running in 3 events, the Wellington Marathon (July), the Abel Tasman Coastal Classic (Sept), the Tussock Traverse (Jan) and then finishing with a fourth in Tanzania with the Kilimanjaro Marathon (Feb).
The funds I raise will be split two ways between the two organisations and I will deliver it in person and see what they are most in need of at the time and help purchase the items, whether it be more medical supplies, mosquito nets, food, and school supplies and books...
I'm involved because after spending time with these children and seeing how much potential they have I want to do what I can to help them realise that potential. To be able to go to school and succeed and make a life for themselves. Education is something that we take for granted, it is such a gift to these children, so many of whom aren't able to attend school without sponsor support.
Next event 17 November 2015
Well the Abel Tasman Coastal Classic went well with a time close to what my original goal was. The blanket was raffled successfully to Sacha Walters of Wellington and now has a lovely cuddly home.
Now to the next event on the time table.... it looks unlikely that I will be able to do my original plan due to work commitments, so I am looking at doing the Northern Circuit in Tongariro National Park in one day, this is 43km at altitude. So pretty close to what I will be doing in Tanzania. If you want to follow my training, check out my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/42KmsFor42Kids
