Help send Russell for a life changing stroke treatment.
Auckland
In January 2015 Russell suffered a debilitating basal ganglia stroke due to a brain hemorrhage, at the young age of 55, which left him with very little movement and no feeling in the right side of his body. A Basal Ganglia stroke affects a part of the brain between the left and right hemispheres. It is one of the most dangerous and debilitating types of stroke. There was only a 25% chance of him surviving this kind of stroke and many people do not survive more than a year after this.
After the stroke Russell spent 10 days in hospital, before being sent to Rehab Plus for 3 months. Since then, Russell has worked with the kind people at Laura Ferguson to improve his mobility through hydrotherapy and gym exercises. After years of rehab he still has limited mobility and struggles with basic daily tasks.
We take things for granted like being able to drive, going out alone or walking without assistance, but these are struggles Russell faces on a daily basis. Russell is supported by his wife, 4 children and 4 grandchildren and we have all struggled with the affects the stroke has had. To go from full mobility to not being able to even sit up in bed in a matter of only minutes was an eye opener to us all.
Recent breakthroughs in medical science have led to a treatment available in Florida, USA. This procedure will give Russell the opportunity to improve his mobility, muscle spasms and pain caused by the stroke and make life easier for him on a daily basis. See www.strokebreakthrough.com for more information on the treatment.
Unfortunately this treatment is very expensive and requires Russell to be in Florida for 3 to 4 weeks. This treatment, while not guaranteed, would be life changing for Russell and his family. Russell hopes that by participating in this treatment it will bring hope to others and create more research so that in the future it will be more available to others who could benefit from it.
Russell is my dad. I want to help him as I have seen him struggle on a daily basis and this treatment gives him the opportunity to be able to live a normal life.
The money will be used for two rounds of stroke treatment and to pay for flights and accommodation to Florida for Russell and his wife, Linda.
