Ryan deserves to have his Mum by his side during this journey.
Waikato
On 27th December 2020 while enjoying a well-deserved family holiday, 16-year-old Ryan suffered a sudden brain bleed. After family keeping Ryan alive with CPR, he was airlifted to Waikato Hospital where he had surgery to relieve the pressure from his brain. He spent just over a week in ICU in a coma, and continues to receive full time care at Waikato Hospital. Ryan will require many months of intensive rehabilitation at a full-time specialised rehabilitation clinic learning to walk, talk, eat and learn basic life skills again- this clinic will most likely will be in Auckland.
Ryan’s dedicated Mum, Rebecca, is currently trying to juggle supporting Ryan and her two other children, while working a full-time job as an incredible ECE Teacher in Hamilton. This is an emotional and exhausting journey, and although Rebecca has the support of her wonderful family, it is not sustainable to be working full time while trying to give Ryan the love and nurturing he needs currently, and moving forward with travelling to Auckland to be with him in the Rehabilitation clinic.
As Ryan’s brain bleed was the result of a medical event rather than an accident, the family is not entitled to any ACC support at this stage.
Any funds gained will go towards allowing Rebecca to take leave from work to spend more time with Ryan and support his rehabilitation.
I am a friend and work colleague of Rebecca's. I have worked alongside Rebecca, who is a dedicated ECE Teacher, and constantly admire her dedication to her own 3 children.
Any funds gained will go towards allowing Rebecca to take leave from work to spend more time with Ryan and support his rehabilitation.
Ryan is coming home! 22 June 2021
On Friday 25th June we will be bringing Ryan back home to Hamilton.
It has been 6 months since our lives were turned upside down and Ryan's life changed forever. Thanks to the amazing staff at The Wilson Centre, Ryan has made some significant progress and they have given him hope for regaining a life doing things he loves like fishing, paddle boarding, kayaking, camping and biking.
We have been surrounded by an amazing community of people that have supported us in so many ways so that we could focus on Ryan. It would be fair to say Ryan has felt the love and wishes from everyone.
Ryan's journey is a long one. We are not sure what rehabilitation and life will look like in Hamilton, however he will have family, pets and friends close by encouraging him and motivating him. He also has a dedicated family that will continue to advocate for Ryan and his needs in a system that is complex, inadequate and unjust.
Ryan's mind is sharp and he doesn't miss anything. He keeps everyone on their toes and hits them with his sarcasm and very, very dry humour. We are looking forward to having Ryan back in our daily life and making more of those special and fun filled memories.
