12 months ago I was in hospital with a broken ankle, and now I have been selected to represent New Zealand at the Under 23 World Champs.
Waikato
After dislocating and breaking my ankle in April last year I am back at the top of my game and have been selected to represent New Zealand in the single scull as a part of the team for the World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Poznan, Poland from the 25th to the 29th of July, 2018.
My injury occurred in the week leading up to the trials for this same team in 2017 but at no point have I doubted my ability to come back faster and stronger than I have ever been. Being forced to take a break out of the boat was a struggle, but not being able to do something that I love so much only made my return that much sweeter. Sitting in my hospital bed the day after my injury I received the news that I had been awarded the Andrea Harper trophy for the Waikato RPC Female athlete of the year for the 2016-2017 season. This recognition helped me to understand my potential and spur me on in my recovery.
The initial prognosis from the medical team was 12-18 months out of the boat and competition. I worked closely with my coaches and the physiotherapists and I was back in a boat after 3 months. It was the best early 21st birthday present I could have asked for. I have had no major complications but may have future surgery on the cards to restore a better range of motion.
Poland represents more to me than just an opportunity to race for my country. It is my chance to show not only the world, but myself, and my friends and family, what I can do in the single. In a way it is the chance to hit restart on my international rowing career. For this reason, training is my key focus through to the end of July and beyond. This means that, I don't have enough time in the day to get everything done that I need to. Specifically after training for 20-25 hours per week, working for 5-10 and studying for my Health, Sport and Human Performance undergraduate degree, I don't have the time to earn enough money to cover the cost of my campaign. When tour travel costs are considered next to my living costs for the campaign, there is a clear disparity between what I am able to earn with my part time work and what I need help to raise.
Any support you can provide is gratefully received and I would welcome any alternative ideas for support such as fundraising concepts, grocery items or petrol vouchers.
The funds will primarily be used toward my tour costs (flights and overseas accommodation) and any excess will go toward my living costs in Cambridge (rent, household expenses, food and petrol)
