Sammi's Surgery

  • Update 24.07.2025

      24 July 2025

We have just had the best news! Sammi is scheduled to have her surgery on her left leg on 15 October. They are doing her left leg first as it is her less dominant leg, then in 2 to 3 months pending her rehab they will then do the right leg. She will be having the surgery in Dunedin because the surgeon wants her close to an ICU just in case there are any issues with infection. If she had the surgery in Queenstown and needed to be airlifted to Dunedin we would need to pay for this as an additional cost. To be honest, we can work with the logistics of the operation being done in Dunedin and with the best care available for Sammi.

I will be flying into Dunedin and Sammi will pick me up from the airport as she drives through from Queenstown. We will be in Dunedin until her discharge from hospital and then I will drive us back to Queenstown. Her and I will then be ready to tackle her rehab, we will set up all the required services to help her and once that’s done I will likely head back to Auckland, at this stage estimated about two weeks, although I will be returning again in December.

  • 16.05.25 - Consultation with the Surgeon

      22 May 2025

Sammi had the consultation with the Surgeon on Friday 16th May. It was very positive, he is extremely happy with the x-rays showing no additional concerns to the ankle bones and joints. He wants to proceed with the surgery before the end of this year. It is his preference that the surgery takes place in Dunedin, just in case Sammi ends up with an infection and needing ICU care.

He has confirmed that he will do the surgery on each leg at separate times, the first will be her left leg, and then after Sammi completes rehab (2-3 months) he will schedule the surgery for her right leg.

This will mean two trips for us both to Dunedin but we understand the surgeon's concerns and accept that this is the best option while erring on the side of caution.

We really appreciate everyone's support and look forward to updating everyone with a confirmed date for Sammi's first surgery.

  • Update 15.04.25 - Appointment confirmed with Surgeon

      15 April 2025

We have just received a call from our preferred (highly recommended) private surgeon with an appointment for Sammi on the 16th of May at 9.30am in Queenstown.

This journey is now looking more promising than ever that she could potentially get her urgent surgery this side of Christmas.

We are so thankful to everyone that has donated to our Give a Little page, to help us fund Sammi's much needed surgery. We understand not everyone is able to donate, but if you could share the Give a Little link far and wide, this would be so much appreciated 🥰❤️

Firstly, we just want to thank everyone for their donations, it is so much appreciated. We are working on ways to try to get Sammi's situation out to as many avenues as possible to help us raise the funds we need to get her surgery. If you can help us with this, it would be much appreciated.

We have found a highly recommend surgeon who has a clinic in Queenstown and does surgery in Queenstown too. We expect to get an appointment with him for his clinic in May, this could potentially make it possible for Sammi to have her surgery this side of Christmas, which would be amazing.

We will keep you updated, in the meantime Sammi is actively volunteering at QT Community Cat Rescue.
