Help Sammi's family self-fund her surgery.
Auckland
Sammi was a vibrant young woman working as a Health Care Assistant at a local Aged Care Facility. At 21, her life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome in Dec 2022, just two weeks after her 21st birthday, causing paralysis from her feet to her shoulders. Despite the challenges of learning to walk again, Sammi remained resilient and determined, supported by her family.
Sammi's condition led to two years of toe walking, causing severe strain on her knee and hip joints and shortening her Achilles tendons. Her doctors have determined she urgently needs bilateral Achilles tendon release surgery to treat her shortened Achilles tendons. This shortening causes constant, excruciating pain, limits her ability to walk and has a major affect on her posture and balance, making daily activities more challenging and causing overwhelming fatigue.
The public health system's wait time for an orthopaedic consultation and surgery is 4+ years, risking further complications, including the need for knee and hip replacements by age 30, and significantly affecting Sammi's mental health.
Determined to provide the best care, we have decided to pursue self-funded surgery. We contacted several orthopaedic surgeons, seeking immediate intervention. We have set up this page to raise funds for the surgery to ensure Sammi can undergo surgery without delay, paving the way for a brighter future, so she can return to her passion and career in elderly care and live pain free.
I'm Sammi's mum, she is my only child and she needs to move forward with her life, and get her back to the job she loves, we have been told there is 4+ years waiting time for her surgery. That is too long and will cause more medical issues.
Any funds raised will go towards paying for orthopaedic consultation, surgery, hospital stay, rehabilitation and home care.
Update 24.07.2025 24 July 2025
We have just had the best news! Sammi is scheduled to have her surgery on her left leg on 15 October. They are doing her left leg first as it is her less dominant leg, then in 2 to 3 months pending her rehab they will then do the right leg. She will be having the surgery in Dunedin because the surgeon wants her close to an ICU just in case there are any issues with infection. If she had the surgery in Queenstown and needed to be airlifted to Dunedin we would need to pay for this as an additional cost. To be honest, we can work with the logistics of the operation being done in Dunedin and with the best care available for Sammi.
I will be flying into Dunedin and Sammi will pick me up from the airport as she drives through from Queenstown. We will be in Dunedin until her discharge from hospital and then I will drive us back to Queenstown. Her and I will then be ready to tackle her rehab, we will set up all the required services to help her and once that’s done I will likely head back to Auckland, at this stage estimated about two weeks, although I will be returning again in December.
