Being the first person with a disability to sail for the island of Samoa
Auckland
Samoan sets his sails… with a difference!
After climbing the world’s tallest towers, I am now taking on the high seas.
I have been invited to represent my home island of Samoa in the 2017 European Hansa Class Championships.
Where: the Meze situated on the Étang de Thau in southern France
When: October 16 to 27.
The host club: the Yacht Club de Meze.
Quick facts
1. First time a Samoan with a disability has sailed in the European championships
2. Partnering with Sailability Auckland will help with training and boat use.
3. Chris Sharp (a Paralympic sailor) has accepted the challenge of volunteering to coach me.
The tricky part is the lack of funds available for this once in a lifetime opportunity. I am passionate about putting Samoa on the sailing map however this dream comes with a price tag of $8,000-10,000 New Zealand dollars. This includes flights, accommodation (for Chris and I), race entry, sailing gear and boat hire.
I know this is a lot to ask but if you are able to make a donation. I’ll be able sail the French seas in your name.
I’m completely humbled by this opportunity.
