Judie's Mission for Vision

About the cause:

My name is Sarah and I want to raise funds for my Mum to pay for an eye surgery that will restore her sight. Surgery is approximately $5,000 per eye and my goal is to raise enough money to have at least one eye done. Any additional funds will be donated towards research and/or assistance concerned with Dermatomyositis/Muscular Dystrophy.

About my Mum:

My Mum Judie has been diagnosed with a type of Muscular Dystrophy (MD), Dermatomyositis (DM). One of the major effects that have taken its toll on my Mum is the progressive loss of her vision, effectively becoming blind. This effect alongside being unable to do the every day simple things that we take for granted, like going for a walk, having a shower by yourself or enjoying a meal have become almost impossible or at the very least with extreme difficulty. As you can imagine after living a life with the ability to enjoy all of these everyday actions with your full senses and capabilities, then to be slowly stripped of them one at a time is heart-breaking.

I know there isn't much that can be done to reverse these effects but as her daughter I want to do whatever I can to help make this journey easier for the woman who has sacrificed multiple times in her life for me. So that even when she finds it difficult to walk on her own, eat on her own, shower on her own, drive on her own, I want her to still be able to see all of life's beauty with her own eyes.

To support our fundraising efforts, I have already held a couple of really successful All Black memorabilia auctions on Trade Me which raised $1500.

A friend and I also participated in the Skechers 6k Running Event whilst pushing Judie the whole length in a wheelchair of which we received great support by means of donation also!

About Muscular Dystrophy:

Muscular Dystrophy is the name given to a group of inherited muscle diseases that cause progressive degeneration and weakness of the muscles. Muscle dystrophy can occur at any age. People affected by Neuromuscular disorders have different degrees of independence, mobility and care needs. Each of the approximately 60 Neuromuscular disorders has a separate cause.
