Update on Hippogriff
14 September 2025In July 2025, two horses came to me for handling. Hippogriff was being handled for Sonja, with the plan being that he would join her equine therapy programme. Pākiki was being handled for 15 year old Breanna, with the plan he would become her ridden horse, having a life of happy hacking over her family's large station.
Pākiki has a conformational issue that means he cannot comfortably become a ridden horse. The vet is optimistic he can live a comfortable and happy life as a non-ridden horse.
Sonja, on learning this, generously gifted Hippogriff to Breanna. Hippogriff is 5 years old, a gentle, quiet and thinking boy, who is strong and sound.
That way Breanna gets to go on and have her ridden Kaimanawa dream with a horse she saw arrive, followed the journey of during her many hours hanging out with both horses and helping me with them.
Kaimanawa Legacy Foundation then stepped in and ensured Sonja received a lovely boy for her equine therapy programme from among its excess horse programme.
Pākiki, is staying with me for now. The hope is that he will rejoin Hippogriff when he is ready to graduate to live a non-ridden life with Breanna.
We sought donations for Hippogriff's costs on the basis he would be Sonja's horse and become part of her therapy programme. If you donated towards that and you are not comfortable with this new direction for Hippogriff, please do get in touch with either Sonja or me.
