Help Sonja at Pongarosa Equestrian rescue a Kaimanawa horse, rebuild her business and support her life-changing Equine Therapy programmes
Pukekohe, Auckland
The July 2025 wild Kaimanawa muster is imminent.
Sonja Mors of Pongarosa Equestrian hopes to rescue a Kaimanawa horse for her equine healing programmes — Equine Therapy, Human Equine Assisted Reality Therapy (HEART) and Human Assisted Learning Organisation (HALO). These programmes support people with PTSD, anxiety, addiction, and soon will help those with traumatic brain injuries (TBI). They help both adults and children and make real change. Because they are mostly ground-based, Pongarosa's programmes give jobs and purpose to horses often overlooked: minis, smaller, older, and unridable horses. Each muster has Kaimanawas like these who are harder to rehome — this is a chance to give one a future.
Besides Equine Therapy, HEART and HALO, Pongarosa Equestrian runs low-cost grassroots events — in-hand classes, obstacle, ribbon days, ODEs, dressage, and camps — confidence-building opportunities for the local equine community that many of us have enjoyed over the years.
Last year, Sonja suffered a serious concussion, forcing her to pause events and live off savings. While rebuilding, she can’t cover the initial outlay for a rescue but can provide long-term care.
I’ve known Sonja for years. Her horses are meticulously cared for in nutrition, bodywork, work/life balance, and love. So I wanted to help. I am going to tame her horse.
We need to raise $2,500. We have had prior pledges of $1,100. That leaves $1,400 to raise.
- Up to 12 weeks initial handling - free
- Grazing/hay/feed 12 weeks - $900
- Gelding - $800
- 2 x hoof trims - $140
- Transport - $100
- Initial dental $260
- Ulcer treatment - $300
Update on Hippogriff 14 September 2025
In July 2025, two horses came to me for handling. Hippogriff was being handled for Sonja, with the plan being that he would join her equine therapy programme. Pākiki was being handled for 15 year old Breanna, with the plan he would become her ridden horse, having a life of happy hacking over her family's large station.
Pākiki has a conformational issue that means he cannot comfortably become a ridden horse. The vet is optimistic he can live a comfortable and happy life as a non-ridden horse.
Sonja, on learning this, generously gifted Hippogriff to Breanna. Hippogriff is 5 years old, a gentle, quiet and thinking boy, who is strong and sound.
That way Breanna gets to go on and have her ridden Kaimanawa dream with a horse she saw arrive, followed the journey of during her many hours hanging out with both horses and helping me with them.
Kaimanawa Legacy Foundation then stepped in and ensured Sonja received a lovely boy for her equine therapy programme from among its excess horse programme.
Pākiki, is staying with me for now. The hope is that he will rejoin Hippogriff when he is ready to graduate to live a non-ridden life with Breanna.
We sought donations for Hippogriff's costs on the basis he would be Sonja's horse and become part of her therapy programme. If you donated towards that and you are not comfortable with this new direction for Hippogriff, please do get in touch with either Sonja or me.
Sonja's update on all of this is here:
Thankyou. He is a lovely horse to work with. He thinks through things, tries, keeps himself steady, and has become very affectionate - always neighing hello to me and coming to greet us when we arrive.
